Fallbrook / Oceanside Fire Smoke and Soot Cleanup

5/4/2019 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Fallbrook / Oceanside Fire Smoke and Soot Cleanup Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Fallbrook / Oceanside home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting.

Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

3 Ways Storm Flood Cleanup Differs From Plumbing Flood Cleanup

4/29/2019 (Permalink)

Storm Damage 3 Ways Storm Flood Cleanup Differs From Plumbing Flood Cleanup Give SERVPRO a call if you experience storm damage.

Flooding can impact your South Oceanside, CA home in a variety of ways. However, the kind of water that enters your home may have an effect on what kind of damage you need to deal with in the aftermath. Storm floods, for example, may need to be handled differently than how you would clean up water from a burst pipe in your kitchen, and knowing how storm flood water differs from other types of flooding can help you clean it up quickly and safely.

3 Ways Storm Flood Cleanup Differs From Plumbing Flood Cleanup

  1. Storm Waters May Contain Sewage

One of the dangers of natural flooding is the contamination level of the water. Flood water that comes from torrential rains may contain feces, urine and chemicals from nearby clogged sewers, making it dangerous to handle. This type of black water should only be removed by a certified storm cleanup and water damage company that has the equipment to drain and dispose of it safely.

  1. Outdoor Floods Often Contain Debris

Dealing with a flood from a burst pipe in your home is typically cleaner than storm flooding, which typically contains mud, sewer sludge and outdoor debris. These substances can be difficult to clean, even with a commercial shop vacuum cleaner. These types of floods usually require the services of a professional water damage cleanup company, which can bring in trash and sump pumps to clear away the debris.

  1. Indoor Floods May Be More Controllable

While indoor floods may cause some damage, they can usually be controlled by turning off your home’s water. This can reduce flood damage and make cleanup simpler. Outdoor flood waters are usually impossible to prevent or control, which means you may be dealing with a more difficult cleanup process once they recede.

Various types of flood waters in South Oceanside, CA can affect your home. However, there is a marked difference between storm flooding and floods that occur due to plumbing issues, and understanding the difference can help make cleanup easier.

4 Tips for Storm Preparation

Storm Damage 4 Tips for Storm Preparation Don't wait until disaster strikes to make a plan to keep your family safe

Some storms may spring up suddenly, but being aware of when storm season in South Oceanside, CA, is approaching can help you prepare your home for its arrival. By following these tips, you can weather the season’s storms better and hopefully stay above the flood water.

1. Stay Alert

You can’t protect your family and yourself against a problem you don’t know is coming. Your community probably has a severe weather warning system in place. Sign up for notifications, and keep an eye on the radar when your area is under a severe storm threat.

2. Update Protection

The moment you are standing in your flooded home is not the time to wonder about whether your flood insurance has expired. Storm restoration can be very expensive. Make sure that you always have adequate coverage for water damage, especially if you live in an area that tends to see significant flooding.

3. Maintain Regularly

There are ways to shield your home from extensive damage from flood water. Consider installing a sump pump in the basement. Make sure your gutters stay clear of debris, particularly during rainy seasons. Make sure valuables are stored in higher places so that are less likely to get wet.

4. Have a Plan

Everyone in the family should know what to do in an emergency. Outline evacuation routes and talk about safety precautions. Pack an emergency bag that you can just grab and go if you need to vacate your flooded building quickly. In this bag, be sure to include copies of valuable documents, such as the deed to your home and contact information for your insurance company and local flood restoration specialists. Know what you need to do before you need to do it.

Weather can be unpredictable, but that doesn’t mean you have to be unprepared. Taking precautions before the flood water starts to rise is key to getting through the storm.

Determine Which Water-Damaged Electronics Can Be Saved

4/18/2019 (Permalink)

Business owners in South Oceanside, CA, may depend heavily on computers, security systems and other electronics. They have invested quite a bit in getting them set up and rely on their accuracy and performance. But what happens when a pipe breaks, a faulty sprinkler system is set off, or there is water damage from extinguishing a fire and the owner ends up with a room full of flooded electronics? It can be an expensive process to deal with the mess and repair, to say nothing of the electronic damage that they experience.

The National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) has some strict guidelines about what may be salvaged in the event of flooded electronics. Each piece of equipment must be evaluated to determine what may be refurbished and what must be scrapped.

NEMA Guidelines - Dealing With Water Damaged Electronics

1. In many cases, the manufacturer must be consulted.

2. Inspection will determine what needs to be replaced and what can potentially be reconditioned.

Items such as electrical distribution equipment, motor control equipment, adjustable speed drives, and motor control centers are all subject to corrosion and insulation damage and will likely need to be replaced. However, some power equipment, transformers, outlet boxes and fittings, conduits and tubing, wire, cable and arc-fault circuit interrupters, surge-protective devices and cable trays could potentially be rewired and tested for reuse.

Batteries on the other hand, are subject to internal corrosion and rust, may expel harmful corrosive elements and should be destroyed. These are just a few of the items that must be considered and may vary depending on time and saturation of water exposure.

Meeting all of those requirements can be very intimidating. Determining the extent of the damage and what needs to be done about it is a job for professionals who are versed in the NEMA guidelines for flooded electronics. This is not something that a business should decide. A business owner in South Oceanside, CA should call local water damage assessment professionals to make that determination. They will know how to dry out and salvage many of the electronic devices, cutting business losses to a minimum.

Protect Your Business: Learn These 3 Facts About Ceiling Mold

4/12/2019 (Permalink)

Commercial Protect Your Business: Learn These 3 Facts About Ceiling Mold Black mold is dangerous and it can turn into a major problem for your commercial property.

Protecting your South Oceanside, CA, commercial property is likely a priority for you, no matter your business niche. However, there are some dangers that can develop out of sight and turn into a major problem before you can spot them, such as black mold growth. This fungus and others like it can cause serious damage to multiple building materials, but knowing a few facts about how to find and eliminate them may help you to better defend your building.

1. Humidity Encourages Growth

Moisture and humidity are two of the major causes behind ceiling mold. Once mold spores in the air find this type of environment, they latch on, eat and start to spread. Spores from new growth can then spread to other areas of the ceiling. If your area sees humid summers or plenty of rain, consider installing ceiling fans in each area to keep humidity levels low.

2. Leaks Can Attract Mold

Even a small ceiling leak can attract mold spores. It is wise to monitor each floor of your building, especially the attic, after a downpour or during a few consecutive days of wet weather. If you discover that a roof leak is causing the problem, you can lower the risk of mold growth by using a temporary tarp to keep moisture out until your roofing contractor arrives to make repairs.

3. Stains Can Alert You to Leaks

Black mold and other fungi can grow quickly once your ceiling begins to leak, but it may not always be visible. However, sudden and mysterious stains on your ceiling can alert you to a problem, especially if the mold is growing on the underside of the ceiling material. Connecting with a mold damage and removal company can help you resolve this issue and prevent serious problems with your ceiling.

Your South Oceanside, CA, commercial building can come under attack by black mold and other types of damaging fungi during wet weather. Checking your ceilings for leaks and being aware of how mold forms may help you prevent fungi from getting a foothold on your business.

Saving Important Documents After a Flood

3/24/2019 (Permalink)

Your client calls to report that the basement of his or her business in Fallbrook, CA, has been flooded. The big problem is that the flood saturated many important documents. As distressing as this can be, there is hope. The documentation restoration process used by water damage experts is designed to save important documents, even if they have been damaged by flooding. Here are some techniques that the professionals use to make sure your clients don’t lose valuable data.

Drying

SERVPRO uses the same freeze-drying methods employed by the Library of Congress to save wet documents. Many types of documents can be restored this way, including:

  • Invoices and other paper documents
  • Books or manuals
  • Files
  • Photographs
  • Blueprints

Document drying starts with freezing the damaged items. Once frozen, they are placed in a vacuum chamber, removing air. Moisture turns to vapor, and even more, vapor is released as the chamber is slowly warmed.

Sterilizing

If the flooding was caused by a storm, it is likely that the document restoration process will include sterilization. Storm water is considered Category 3 water, which can contain harmful bacteria. Gamma irradiation is used to combat this bacteria. Gamma rays can pass through fibers and kill bacteria at the DNA level by breaking up covalent bonds. Because no heat is produced in this process, it is safe for delicate documents.

Digitizing

Another way that SERVPRO can help your client retrieve their damaged documents is with digitization. Converting important data to digital files can help save a lot of storage space. Digital documents can also be stored remotely, freeing them from the dangers of any flooding, fire or damage to the building that may occur in the future.

If your client has a flooding disaster that damages important documents, there is probably no need to panic. When you choose SERVPRO as a preferred vendor, its document restoration team can help your client retrieve the important information needed to run his or her business.

My Water Heater Is Leaking: Now What?

3/17/2019 (Permalink)

Water Damage My Water Heater Is Leaking: Now What? Take care of your water heater to eliminate expensive water damage

Out of sight, out of mind: the home water heater is an easy appliance to forget when planning routine maintenance. Water pooling outside of the drain pan is a sign of trouble, and just mopping up the water around a leaking water heater will not solve the problem. Assessing where the water is coming from will determine the best course of action that you need to take to mitigate the risk of a failed water heater and resulting expensive repair.

Consider the Source

There are various reasons why you may have a leaking water heater:

  • The gaskets and valves may have come loose from the water pressure flowing through the system.
  • Pressure from the temperature setting being too high can cause leaks.
  • Debris in the tank is also a common cause of leaking.

Turn the power off to the water heater before trying to manipulate any of the parts on the machine. Turning the unit's water switch on and off can help determine exactly where the leak is coming from.

Determine Where the Water Is Coming From

If the leak is minor and appears to be coming from a particular valve, tightening the valve with a wrench will probably do the trick. If the problem is more serious, such as water spraying from the middle or bottom of the tank, you will likely have some water damage. Call a professional to assess the water damage and ensure the repairs are done safely.

Know When It's Time To Replace the Water Heater

Water heaters do have a finite life cycle. Rust and corrosion are signs that the water heater is near the end of its useful life. A broken water heater needs to be replaced as soon as possible to eliminate the risk of extensive and expensive water damage.

A leaking water heater needs to be addressed quickly. Having the number of a plumber and water restoration expert in South Oceanside, CA, taped to your heater will give you the peace of mind that help is not far away.

Can Mold Go Away on Its Own?

3/6/2019 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Can Mold Go Away on Its Own? Water loss airflow quickens the evaporation of water making it difficult for settled spores to grow.

So, you had a moisture problem, smelly mold emerged, and you quickly swung into action removing standing water and drying surfaces. The area is dry, and the mold is gone – or is it? Many people think that once an area is dry and they can’t see mold, it’s gone. The fact is black mold doesn’t ever go away without targeted actions. If you’re wondering whether mold is truly gone from your South Oceanside, CA home, learn more about what it takes to eradicate mold.

How Mold Grows

Mold is one of those things nearly every homeowner will encounter. That’s because the things needed for it to grow are so pervasive. All this fungus needs to grow are:

  • Oxygen
  • Moisture
  • Warmth
  • Food

The latter can be as simple as paper, drywall, wood or other organic matter. Eliminating mold is as simple as drying the area out, right? Not quite.

Dried-Out Mold Becomes Inactive

It’s true that drying a moldy area will stop active mold growth because spores need moisture to multiply. But this doesn’t impact the existing mold. So, while mold may not spread, it will continue to exist causing smells and unsightly stains.

Dried-Out Mold Can Become Active

Worse yet, if any sort of water makes it to the remaining fungus, can reactivate a patch of black mold. That means it can start producing spores again and new mold can appear.

Dried-Out Mold Needs to Be Removed

The fact is, whether dried or not, mold needs to be removed to prevent reactivation and new growth. To actually remove the fungus, you must clean nonporous surfaces that were contaminated and throw away porous materials.
Cutting out moisture is step one in eradicating black mold, but it’s not the end of the process. Work with a residential mold cleanup specialist to create a plan to truly eliminate mold and take your home bag from this bothersome fungus.

Storm Damage The First 4 Things To Do After a Flood Strikes SERVPRO of Fallbrook/South Oceanside provides storm damage restoration.

When A Flood Strikes Your Business

Storm damage is likely a reality for your business in Fallbrook,CA. When your workplace is struck by a flood, it’s important to have a plan for content cleaning. Nobody wants to think about damage and the potential for devastation, but thinking ahead could alleviate some of the destruction caused by water.

1. Remember That Employee Safety Is Key

It’s crucial to make sure your workplace is safe to enter following a storm. If any electrical boxes were impacted by water, you need to have an inspector make sure the building is free from danger. Also, be mindful that wet floors could cause workers to slip and fall.

2. Start Removing Excess Water

When it is safe to enter your business, start dealing with water by mopping it up. Inspect your things to see what can be restored. It’s much cheaper if you can do content cleaning on items rather than replacing them.

3. Deal With Wet Furniture and Accessories

After removing items from tables, start wiping the excess water away. Take cushions off couches and chairs; prop them up against a wall for faster drying. Remove photos or art from walls, and store them in a dry place.

4. Know What To Save and What To Discard

Certain items in your office may be able to be saved after being touched by storm waters. Non-porous materials like stainless steel are constructed to withstand water and have the best chance of survival. Porous objects like terry cloth towels may have to be discarded. These items allow water to pass through them freely and are more susceptible to damage.

Acting quickly following a storm gives you the best opportunity to save many of your office items. If you’re overwhelmed by the amount of work created by water damage, you could seek professional help for content cleaning. You’ll definitely need help if your business is ever impacted by black water. Find a company that provides storm damage restoration before a storm hits. That way, you’ll have a company to turn to if severe weather wreaks havoc on your office.

Equipment You Can Use To Remove Smoke Odor in Your Home

Fire Damage Equipment You Can Use To Remove Smoke Odor in Your Home A thermal fogger can make the process of smoke cleaning less labor intensive

Removing Smoke in Your Home

Removing smoke in your home in South Oceanside, CA, after it has been damaged by a fire can be a difficult, time-consuming process, and even after scrubbing and cleaning, the smell of smoke may still be present. However, with the right equipment, smoke cleaning can be simple and effective.

1. Air Filtration Devices

There are a wide variety of air filtration devices that are often used after a home has been impacted by a fire. Air filtration devices help to make the air in the home safe to breathe and can also lessen the smell of smoke simultaneously. Many of these devices use HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filters in their machines because HEPA filters are able to capture small particles out of the air.

2. Ozone Machines

Ozone machines are often used in the process of smoke cleaning because the machines are incredibly effective. First, the ozone machine is placed in the area that has been affected by smoke. Large homes may require the use of more than one ozone machine. These machines change the makeup of smoke particles through oxidation. As a result, the smell of smoke can be eliminated.

3. Thermal Foggers

Thermal foggers are specialized pieces of equipment that can help to assist in removing smoke odor throughout the home. Fogging involves, as the name suggests, a fog being released into the area that has smoke damage. The fog particles can reach into small places, such as in miniscule cracks, in the same manner, that smoke particles can reach into such places. The fog is then able to neutralize the odor of smoke.

Using equipment such as air filtration devices, ozone machines, and thermal foggers can make the process of smoke cleaning less labor-intensive. Some homeowners whose houses have been damaged by fires find it useful to get in touch with fire and smoke damage restoration experts when they are unsure about neutralizing odors.

Common Causes of Mold Under Sinks

1/22/2019 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Common Causes of Mold Under Sinks Bathrooms with a shower should be properly ventilated to prevent mold growth due to humidity

Common Causes of Mold Under Sinks

Whether it is caused by a leaking sink or other plumbing issues, mold underneath sinks in your home in Fallbrook,CA  can be difficult to spot until major damage has occurred. However, knowing common causes of mold growth under sinks can make it easier to take preventative steps.

1. Leaks

Mold requires access to organic material and water in order to thrive, and when a pipe is leaking, this creates an excellent environment for mold to grow. Mold can grow on various areas under sinks and can grow in a span of only one or two days in the right conditions. In order to prevent mold from causing major damage, it’s often helpful to fix the leak as soon as possible.

2. Issues with Appliances

Though a leaking sink can, of course, cause mold to grow under sinks, there are other plumbing problems that can also result in mold growing underneath your sinks. Since sinks are often placed near other appliances in bathrooms or kitchens, it’s possible that water is coming from leaks in other appliances, such as from a dishwasher. Additionally, if the sealant wears down over time, loose caulk could allow for water to drip underneath the sink.

3. High Humidity

Sinks are generally necessary in kitchens and bathrooms, but these areas in the home are often the perfect places for mold to grow. In bathrooms, humidity levels rise when someone takes a warm bath or shower, and in kitchens, humidity levels are higher when food is boiled or steamed. To keep the humidity at an acceptable level to prevent mold growth, it’s often wise to use dehumidifiers in these areas.

Understanding that a leaking sink, faulty appliances and high levels of humidity can cause mold to grow under sinks should make preventing mold easier. However, if your home is experiencing major mold problems, consider contacting mold remediation professionals.

5 Tips for Commercial Fire Safety

Why SERVPRO 5 Tips for Commercial Fire Safety Practice your evacuation plan

5 Tips for Commercial Fire Safety

As a business owner, the safety of your employees and everyone else in your building in South Oceanside,CA, is in your hands. Are you prepared to respond quickly in the event of a business fire? Follow these safety tips to ensure that you can answer that question in the affirmative.

1. Safety Features

Your two main sources of protection during a fire are your fire suppression system and your fire extinguishers. Have your fire suppression system, including alarm panels, fire doors and sprinklers, inspected regularly. Make sure you have enough working fire extinguishers to place one at least every 75 feet and that they are mounted properly.

2. Fire Codes

Your building is bound by both state and federal fire codes. Exits must be properly marked and the pathways to them unobstructed. Electrical plates must be used to cover all wiring so that none of it is exposed. Comply with all laws and make immediate changes when mandated by fire marshals.

3. Material Labeling

All potentially hazardous or flammable material must be stored properly. It is also essential to label liquids that could easily contribute to a business fire so that anyone who sees them knows what they are.

4. Evacuation Plan

Before firefighters can put out the fire and fire damage specialists can restore your building, everyone must vacate it. Having an evacuation plan helps everyone know what they’re supposed to do. This plan should be posted in prominent areas, especially around exits.

5. Evacuation Practice

Even the best plan is useless unless people know about it. Fire drills are a necessary part of fire preparation. Having a drill twice a year helps your employees practice fire safety plan so that they know what to do in case of an emergency.

The best business fire protection is preparation. Keeping your building up to code and enforcing safety measures can help you prevent most fires, and having a workable fire suppression system and evacuation plan can help get people to safety for the fires you can’t prevent.

What Homeowners Should Know About Secondary Damage

1/18/2019 (Permalink)

Water Damage What Homeowners Should Know About Secondary Damage Every mold infestation is different.

5 Steps To Protect Your Home From Secondary Damage.

When water damage occurs in your residence, quick action is critical. Even after the leak or flood that caused the initial destruction has ended, secondary damage, such as black mold, can still occur if the property is not effectively dried and treated. If your home in South Oceanside,CA , has sustained water damage, taking the following important steps can help you protect your home.

1. Extract the Water

Mold can grow in as little as 24 hours, so your home should be dried out as quickly as possible. Extract all standing water and make sure all surfaces are free of moisture. If the area is small, then a wet/dry vacuum may do the job, but more extensive water may require the use of professional-grade equipment.

2. Lower Humidity

High humidity can also encourage mold growth, so open the doors and windows, and run fans in each room. Dehumidifiers can be utilized to further decrease moisture and water vapor in the air.

3. Remove Wet Items

Porous materials, including carpets, rugs, insulation, furniture and upholstery, should be removed as quickly as possible to inhibit black mold from growing.

4. Sanitize and Disinfect

All exposed surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned with commercial-grade products and disinfectants to remove the dirt and bacteria that provide nutrients for mold.

5. Monitor the Area

After your home has been dried and cleaned, you will need to watch closely for any signs of mold. Obviously, visible mold can be easily identified as a problem, but mold can also grow in areas that can’t be easily seen. You should thoroughly check darker areas that are prone to dampness. Look out for any musty odors that may smell similar to mildew.

If you suspect you may have black mold in your home, or if you’re unsure how to effectively clean after water damage, contact a mold remediation specialist to resolve any problems and help you avoid costly secondary damage to your property.

5 Steps for Drying Out a Water-Damaged Building

12/31/2018 (Permalink)

When it comes to water damage, nothing is more important than acting quickly and calmly. These five practical water damage tips can help protect your belongings and commercial property in South Oceanside,CA, from damage, or hold you over until water damage restoration specialists arrive.

1. Document All Damage

Immediately get photographic evidence of all the damage throughout the building. Try to identify the source of the leak, such as a pipe burst. Whatever the cause, documentation can save you time and stress when negotiating coverage with your insurance company.

2. Circulate Air

Of these damage tips, the most time-sensitive may be the use of air circulation to stave off further damage or warping. Buy or rent high-powered industrial fans to powerfully blow air. Open closet or cupboard doors to provide airflow. Depending on the humidity outside, crack open windows and vents. Large industrial dehumidifiers are also recommended to remove moisture from the air.

3. Remove Wet Items and Water

Remove wet flooring, furniture and other fixtures, as these only add to the moisture level. Keep in mind that household vacuums generally aren’t designed for water. Use an industrial wet/dry vacuum to absorb lingering water or mud.

4. Sanitize

Since the floodwater could contain waste and sewage, it should be cleaned up as soon as possible. Use warm, fresh, soapy water to clean floors, walls, or any other fixtures that have touched standing water. Don’t neglect ductwork; sanitize any ducts that were filled with water. These cleaning tips can help ensure that surfaces are safe for use.

5. Absorb Remaining Moisture

While fans and dehumidifiers are circulating and drying the air, you can tackle remaining moisture with desiccants, which are tubs of absorbent silica gel, clay or calcium oxide. Desiccants come in an array of sizes; visit your local supermarket or hardware store to find the size and formulation that’s right for you.

Discovering flooding or a pipe burst on your property can be overwhelming. By thinking quickly, staying calm and following these water damage tips, you’re sure to be standing on dry ground in no time!

Top 3 Causes of a Wet Crawl Space

12/20/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage Top 3 Causes of a Wet Crawl Space Remove leaves and other debris from gutters on a regular basis in your South Oceanside, CA

3 Causes for Flooding Below Your Home

How often do homeowners in South Oceanside, CA, go into the crawl space? If you are only heading down there once a year for holiday decorations, you are not checking often enough. A wet crawl space can cause a host of secondary problems from water damage. Here are the top three causes for flooding below your home and what to do next.

1. Gutters and Downspouts

The most common source of rainwater seeping into the house is improper upkeep of exterior gutters and downspouts. Remove leaves and other debris from gutters on a regular basis to keep them functioning properly. Check the downspouts to confirm they have a two foot block extension on the end and are aimed away from the house.

2. Landscaping

When designing and caring for your yard, make choices to prevent a wet crawl space. First, observe the gradient of the space near your home. If the plot slopes towards the house, rainwater can pool and threaten the foundation. Remedy this by slanting the land away from the house. Second, don’t overwater plants and saturate the soil. Finally, always check that the hose is off to avoid a man-made flood from finding its way in.

3. Broken Pipes

Unfortunately, sometimes pipes burst without warning. If your water bill seems higher than usual or you notice dampness in walls or carpeting, check the crawl space. Leaking pipes take the natural course of gravity which can lead to flooding in the lowest part of your home.

After a big storm in South Oceanside, CA, check to see if you have a wet crawl space. Even without significant rainfall, peek down there at least once a month to ensure that it is dry. Any time water sits for an extended period of time, especially in a dark environment, mold threatens to grow and spread. Water restoration specialists have the knowledge and tools to locate the source of the flood and mitigate the damage.

3 Ways To Prevent a Hotel Fire

12/20/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Damage 3 Ways To Prevent a Hotel Fire Many fires are caused when a smoker falls asleep with a lit cigarette.

Fire Prevention Tips

A hotel fire can endanger the safety of everyone on the premises. Although hotels post fire safety information on doors and in hallways, evacuating from an unfamiliar place can pose a challenge. Here are three fire prevention tips for guests staying in hotels.

1. Use Electronics Responsibly

Reduce the risk of short-circuiting and fires by using electronics responsibly. Only plug devices into suitable plugs. You should never remove the third prong from a grounded plug end to plug a device into an ungrounded outlet. It is also a good idea to avoid overloading outlets. If your room does not meet your needs, ask about other options at the front desk.

2. Exercise Caution With Hot Appliances

Follow safety guidelines if you use a hairdryer, other heated tools, or a clothes iron in a hotel room. Turn off appliances after use, and allow these items to cool on a hard, flat, non-flammable surface. Do not put these appliances away until they are cool to the touch to avoid a hotel fire. If you stay in a room with a kitchenette, make sure the stove is turned off after you finish cooking. Only microwave food intended for this method of preparation.

3. Don't Smoke or Light Candles

Does Your Wall Need a Flood Cut?

12/2/2018 (Permalink)

Why SERVPRO Does Your Wall Need a Flood Cut? Flood cut after flooding

Storm flooding can be a serious concern for homeowners in North San Diego County. Once rising water works its way into your home, it can be very hard to eliminate the problems it causes:

  • Structural damage
  • Mold growth
  • Bacterial or chemical contamination

Your walls are quite susceptible to water damage, especially if they’re insulated. The best way to prevent damage from spreading is to make a flood cut in any wall that’s been exposed to water.

What Is a Flood Cut?

When drywall gets wet, the water seeps in and spreads from the point of contact, weakening the material. To make sure all the damage is removed, a clean, horizontal cut (called a flood cut) is made across the wall, 12 inches above the area that was exposed. After this cut is made, a contractor can tear out and dispose of the soggy drywall material from the flooding. Just as important, the area behind it can now be inspected, cleaned and dried before a new section is put into place. Any moist insulation must also be replaced to prevent mold from growing and because it will no longer act as an insulator.

When Is It Needed?

A cut may not be needed if the floodwater is clean and there’s no insulation or other absorbent material behind the drywall. In that case, professional methods can be used to dry the wall’s interior without completely removing it. In a bad storm, flood waters can carry sewage and other hazardous chemical and biological waste. If these seep into your home, they’ll contaminate your living space, making it very unhealthy. Cutting and replacing compromised wall material is the only way to be certain that all the damage is repaired.

After flooding from a major weather event, you should have any damage repaired by an experienced storm damage restoration service. We can determine whether flood cuts are required to return your home to a safe and healthy living environment.

Workplace Burns: First Aid Steps

12/2/2018 (Permalink)

First Aid Steps

If your employees face minor burns at your Fallbrook, CA business, you’ll need to follow proper burn first aid steps to help preserve the victim’s health and well-being. There are four steps to help soothe, treat and protect minor burns after a commercial fire causes fire damage and injuries.

1. Remove Tight Items

A burn victim should carefully remove watches, rings and other jewelry. That way, he or she is not at risk of further injury if the burn swells and makes such items stick.

2. Soothe the Burn

It is important to cool and soothe the burn as soon as possible. Run the damaged skin under cool water or use a wet compress, making sure that the temperature is not extremely cold. Once the burning pain is under control, apply a soothing moisturizer such as aloe vera to provide further first aid relief.

3. Clean and Bandage

If a blister is found and it has broken, clean the affected area and apply an antibiotic as soon as possible. Next, cover the burn with sterile gauze to keep it protected from the elements and moisture.

4. Alleviate Continuing Pain

Fire damage can disrupt normal thinking, but you need to care for burn victims before handling any building-related issues. If a victim is still suffering after following the three steps above, find an over-the-counter pain reliever such as ibuprofen to aid in easing the pain.

Know When To Get Help

In the aftermath of a commercial fire, it can be hard to remember where to turn for professional assistance. Seek emergency aid by calling 911 if a burn victim seems to have an issue that first aid alone cannot fix. For matters related to your property, SERVPRO of Fallbrook/South Oceanside is ready to assist you. In either case, use your best judgment to decide whether or not a situation can be handled by you alone.

Understanding Mold and How It Spreads

Why SERVPRO Understanding Mold and How It Spreads Mold damage on wall in South Oceanside,CA

When you’re faced with the possibility of black mold at your South Oceanside, CA commercial property, your immediate reaction is presumably to stress out. While there’s reason to be vigilant when it comes to mold cleanup, there’s less reason to be stressed if you understand what you’re dealing with from the beginning. So, what is mold and how does it spread throughout a property? Here are some introductory facts regarding the growth of mold and its typical survival through means of a moisture problem.

Mold is a Fungal Species That Thrives on Heat and Moisture

There are a variety of different strains of mold, each coming in colors like green and black that are sometimes considered to be an indication of  toxicity. Nevertheless, experts have mixed opinions on the extent of toxicity levels among different mold growths. The important thing to focus on as a business owner is that black mold blossoms when it’s in a warm, humid environment that has plenty of access to moisture and a dark hiding place that sees little daylight. These factors joined together create perfect breeding grounds for it to flourish, making these conditions a sign of significant problem areas in your building.

How To Stop Mold From Spreading

The first step to take is to call in a trained team of professional mold remediation specialists to handle the mold removal. This ensures its rightful elimination on site and it can give you peace of mind as a property owner. Meanwhile, you can do your part by seeking out any moisture problem areas that can lead to mold growth. Secure proper ventilation in rooms of high humidity such as kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms. Search for cracks or leaks in basement or cellar walls and floors. Inspect your doors and window frames for leaks due to faulty sealant.

Whatever measures need to be taken regarding your black mold problem, address them now so they don’t become more of an issue later. This can guarantee that your South Oceanside,CA, commercial property is a safe, healthy environment for anyone who enters in the future.

3 Times Fires Aren’t Covered by Insurance

10/24/2018 (Permalink)

If you have experienced a home fire in your Bonsall,CA, home or want to be prepared if one should ever occur, you may be wondering if there are fires that are never covered by insurance. As a matter of fact, there are three types of fires that are not going to be covered by an insurance company to compensate for damage. Read on to learn what these types are.

1. Insurance Fraud

If you attempt to make a claim on a fire that was set deliberately to get insurance money for the incident, your insurance company will not cover it. An adjuster will thoroughly inspect your property for any suspicious evidence.

2. Arson

Insurance fraud as mentioned above is one kind of arson. A home fire that is purposely set either for a specific reason or due to a homeowner’s fascination with flames would fit this description. An insurance company will immediately deny coverage if anything the adjuster finds indicates foul play. Always take the high road and do not set a fire for unethical reasons.

3. Vacant Home

A vacant home fire will not be covered by your homeowners insurance. Generally speaking, if an insurance provider can prove that your home was vacant at the time of the fire and for 30 days prior to the occurrence, your claim will be denied.

A home fire cannot always be avoided; accidents happen. If your fire was completely unintentional and your home was occupied when it occurred, your claim should meet your policy’s coverage terms. It is still a good idea to check your policy documents and call your home insurance agent to make sure that you understand what types of coverage you have and what types you do not. He or she will also be able to explain the claims process and set you up for better success when seeking financial help for your loss.

What To Expect From Your Commercial Generator

10/18/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial What To Expect From Your Commercial Generator Commercial generator in Fallbrook,CA

When you are trying to choose a generator for your commercial property in Fallbrook,CA, there are a few key factors to consider. How many hours should it run? What kind of fuel should it use? Do you need it to keep running overnight? The answers to these questions can help guide you to the machine that best meets your needs.

1. How long can it run?

Many generator problems manifest in the limited amount of time they can run. Ideally, the one you choose will run as long as there is a power supply to keep it going. If you have a continuous power source, you don't have to worry about this as much. If, however, the tank has to be refilled periodically, it is a good idea to conserve energy by only running the generator when absolutely necessary. This is especially true during an extended outage.

2. How is it fueled?

The fuel used to power the standby can affect not only the number of hours it can run continuously but also its reliability. Many commercial machines are powered by natural gas supplied by the local utility company through gas lines, so they can run without interruption. If there is a diesel or propane tank attached, however, you must depend on the reliability of your service providers to make sure they can refuel regularly. While more expensive, diesel models tend to be the most reliable.

3. How often do you need it?

An engine with 3600 RPM is less expensive, but it must be turned off periodically so that it doesn't overheat. If you live in a temperate climate and your building does not need power when no one is there, this may be an acceptable option. If, however, you are concerned that going without power all night could cause pipes to freeze and cost you more in water remediation repairs, go with the 1800 RPM engine.

Choosing a generator is a matter of deciding what you need. By answering these three questions, you can find the machine that meets your expectations.

How to Fix or Replace a Leaky Toilet

10/12/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage How to Fix or Replace a Leaky Toilet If you need to fix or replace a leaky toilet you might have to hire a licensed professional in South Oceanside, CA

A leaking toilet can be a nuisance, but unlike many plumbing problems, toilets are both accessible and easily maintained by even the most novice DIY-er. Follow the three simple steps below to get to the bottom of your flushing woes.

1. Locating the Source of the Leak

An old toilet can cause problems, but that doesn't mean that it needs to be replaced. Most toilet leaks stem from either a faulty flange or loose connections. If you can hear water continuously running, the flange is likely the culprit and can be easily replaced. If the leak is relatively quiet, then you may have a loose water line connection or the toilet’s floor bolts need to be snugged up.

2. Removing the Toilet and Replacing the Gasket

If neither the flange nor the connections are the issue, you may have a gasket problem causing your leaking toilet. To replace the gasket, you can remove the toilet. Turn off the water supply and flush the water. Once dry, you can loosen the floor bolts and remove the toilet, exposing the gasket. Set the new gasket in place and reconnect the toilet to test the seal.

3. Replacing the Toilet

If replacing the wax gasket did not resolve the issue, then it may be time to replace the toilet. You can replace it by following the same process for removing the toilet, but this time you will install the new toilet in its place. Snug up all the bolts and connections and test the new toilet.

4. Calling in the Cavalry

If you are still experiencing leaks, then you may require either plumbing or toilet repair. As this job has many variables, it may be beneficial to hire a licensed professional in South Oceanside, CA to assess and inspect the system.

Could a Water Leak Be Costing You Thousands: Six Common Leaks That Can Lead to Big Costs

10/1/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Could a Water Leak Be Costing You Thousands: Six Common Leaks That Can Lead to Big Costs Leaky faucets can cause you a problem in Bonsall, CA

While water damage is a concern of any water leak, the cost associated with a consistent leak can be more expensive than the repair itself; therefore, it is vital to inspect the six areas below before they become significant issues.

1. Leaky Faucets

Even though that leaky faucet in the break room may not be bothering anybody, that small drip can be causing the loss of up to 20 gallons per day. If you have a leaky faucet, you may be able to fix it by just replacing the washer.

2. Faulty Disposals

Another typical leak occurs in the lunchroom kitchen under the sink. The garbage disposal may have worn gaskets that are leading to several small leaks or drips. You may find it difficult to tell if your disposal is leaking because most often the leak is on the inside.

3. Toilets

If only one restroom has one leaky toilet, you can be wasting up to 73,000 gallons per year, and this converts to a loss of hundreds if not thousands of dollars, depending on the severity of the water leak. Again, replacing flanges and gaskets may be all that is required to fix this problem.

4. Water Heaters

As one appliance that is typically ignored on a daily basis, a water heater could potentially leak for months without being noticed. A water heater leak can lead to the growth of mildew as well as damaged floors and walls.

5. Outside spigots

Another potential leaking hazard that is easy to forget about are exterior spigots. Like faucets, a leaky spigot can lead to extensive water loss, but even worse, it can lead to foundational issues.

6. A Pipe Break

While all the other common sources of leaks are easily inspected, a pipe break will most likely need to be investigated by a plumbing specialist in Bonsall,CA. A good idea is to have annual inspections and sewer cleanings to lower the risk of any extensive damage.

While a water leak can lead to extensive damage, it may be one of the easiest disasters to prevent. Routine inspections and quick action may end up saving your company thousands.

Driving Through Deep Water Is a Risky Proposition.

9/24/2018 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Driving Through Deep Water Is a Risky Proposition. Driving through deep water in Fallbrook, CA

The question of whether to drive over a badly flooded street does not arise often. Doing this would put you, your passengers and your vehicle at risk.

Accepting this risk assumes that:

  • The water is not too deep.
  • The water is not hiding a sinkhole or a washout.
  • There is no submerged debris that could cause tire damage.
  • Your vehicle won’t lose traction and float away.

Before you drive on a flooded street in Fallbrook,CA , you should make sure that you are ready with answers to a few important questions. More information about driving under hazardous conditions can be found in the travel tips section of many websites.

1. Am I Prepared to Walk out of This If Necessary?
It is one thing to answer this question for yourself. It is a completely different matter to answer this question for your passengers, especially small children. The flooded roads and submerged hazards pose a greater risk on foot than they did in the vehicle. The water is likely to be teeming with bacteria. Add live electrical wires, water snakes and alligators and it becomes a dismal situation.

2. Am I Prepared to Damage My Vehicle by Driving Through a Flood?
The likelihood of vehicle damage has a lot to do with ground clearance. Typical passenger vehicles have less than 10 inches of clearance. Expensive problems begin to occur once the water reaches the exhaust.

3. Do I Really Need to Make This Trip?
This is probably the most important question. If you are meeting a friend for coffee, the answer is probably no. If you are taking someone to the hospital emergency room, the answer is probably yes. Answer honestly.

Street Flooding Leads to Home Flooding
A flooded street is often a symptom of a bigger problem. If your home has flooded, consider bringing in a local flood cleanup specialist who can quickly return your life to normal. You will be the envy of all your neighbors.

Assess Mold Damage in 4 Steps

9/17/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Assess Mold Damage in 4 Steps Mold damage in a South Oceanside, CA home

Mold can multiply rapidly when moisture is present in a residence. These four mold assessment steps will lead you from detection to identification, resolution, and remediation of a mold or mildew problem in your home. You can begin to inspect readily accessible areas, but you should never attempt to find hidden mold. For the best results, you should hire a certified specialist or hygienist.

1. Determine Whether Mold is Present

The first step to assessing mold damage is to determine whether mold is growing in a home. If you do not see any visible mold, contact a certified specialist to continue the search. Never attempt to cut holes in walls, floors, or other structural surfaces, or peel wallpaper to check for mold on your own. In doing so, you may expose yourself and other residents or help these spores spread throughout your home.

2. Identify the Type and Extent of Growth

A mold expert or hygienist can locate mold and perform tests to identify the particular type of mold in your home. Keep in mind that black mold is not always black in color. Mold assessment is a job best left to trained experts.

3. Address the Source of the Problem

The primary source for mold or mildew growth is the presence of moisture within a structure. You will need to take steps to fix a leak or dehumidify areas prone to dampness to prevent mold spores from starting to multiply.

4. Inspect Damaged Contents

Some contents or items damaged by mold will need to be safely disposed of and replaced. Mold remediation specialists can help you determine which items are capable of being restored.

These four mold assessment steps can guide residents through every step of the process. If you are dealing with mold in your home in South Oceanside,CA , hire a certified specialist or hygienist and remediation experts.

Financial Responsibility in an Apartment Fire

9/4/2018 (Permalink)

Whether a small apartment fire or a blazing inferno happens at your rental property in Bonsall, CA, you are worried. First, you are concerned about the safety of your renters. Once you know they have securely evacuated the building another big question begins to loom. What is your financial responsibility towards repairing the fire damage?

Expenses Covered by the Landlord

Although you never expect a fire to occur, prepare ahead of time with the proper insurance coverage. When you renew your commercial property insurance, read through and understand the policy specifics including your deductible. Landlords are typically responsible for the following after an apartment fire:

  • Property insurance covers structures such as walls, floors, ceilings, roofing, insulation and related materials. Electrical, plumbing and similar systems are included in this as well.
  • The landlord must return the apartment to a safe, livable condition before the tenants can reoccupy the space.
  • In a timely manner, the landlord needs to arrange for a fire restoration specialist to begin work on the fire damage.

Expenses Covered by the Renter

Encourage or require your tenants to purchase renter’s insurance to reduce their personal expenditures in the case of a fire. The financial responsibility of the following falls to the renter’s wallet:

  • Personal property such as clothing and furniture are typically covered by renter’s insurance.
  • Temporary housing is also usually covered by renter’s insurance in the scenario that the apartment is not in livable condition during restoration.

Expenses Dependent on Fault

When a fire is due to negligent behavior of the landlord or tenant, the financial obligations may be more complicated to understand. In either case, insurance companies may seek reimbursement from the faulty person’s insurance. Parties may also seek personal compensation in small claims court.

As a landlord in Bonsall, CA, an apartment fire is devastating to both you and your renters. Obtain the proper insurance and understand your financial responsibilities to ease the stress involved in the fire damage restoration process.

• Gastroenteritis

• Giardiasis

This kind of contamination can occur as a result of runoff from waterways, or backed up sewer drains or systems. A Quick Guide to Smoke Detector Features

7/18/2018 (Permalink)

When it comes to fire safety, the best device you can buy for your home in South Oceanside, CA is a smoke alarm. The current recommendation is that you replace your alarm every ten years. Check out this quick list of smoke detector features to guide you in your replacement decision.

* Hard-wired or battery. Devices may be wired directly into your home's electrical system or use batteries. Batteries should be replaced yearly, but there are also devices that come with 10-year lithium ion batteries now.

* Interconnected. When one alarm is triggered, all alarms will sound. This has only been available with hard-wired alarms, but battery-powered smart alarms now offer this feature as well.

* Combination alarm. One alarm to sound off for smoke or high carbon monoxide levels.

* Ionizing detection. Fast burning fires are best detected with this type of alarm. These are also triggered easily in error by steamy showers or smoke from caramelized onions. If you are into either of these, you want to look for devices with a hush function so you never deactivate the alarm.

* Photoelectric detection. Smoldering fires are best detected with this kind of smoke alarm.

* Smart alarm. This works with your home's wireless internet to send you a push notification whenever the alarm sounds off.

* Room specific alarms. Some manufacturers are offering features, like no low-battery chirp as well as verbal alarms, to for in-bedroom alarms. Kitchen specific alarms feature sensors to detect true fires with less false alarms.

Firefighters recommend that you have both ionizing and photoelectric detection styles in your home. If your home is a little older, you may find that you have too few alarms. The current minimum recommendation is for one smoke alarm on every floor, including the basement, and one outside of each bedroom. This placement is critical to getting your family out of a burning house quickly. With your family safe, you know you can count on restoration professionals to help with any fire damage to your home. Effective Ways To Inform Employees About Mold Containment

7/13/2018 (Permalink)

Many employers are not sure how or whether to inform employees that the company will be undergoing mold removal. When talking about mold growth and removal, business owners can feel out of their depth. But "mold" doesn't have to become a four-letter word in South Oceanside, CA. Your employees' perception of safety depends upon whether you provide transparency during the containment process. Communication can prove more beneficial than leaving your team in the dark. You can do this. Here's how:

1. Anticipate Employee Concerns

Most of your staff is probably familiar with media hype surrounding black mold. In fact, the color of mold is not a true indicator of type. A good mold remediation specialist can brief you on general questions people have about mold removal and containment. Armed with the facts, you can address concerns and reassure your workers that their safety is your top priority.

2. Provide Employee Education on Mold Containment

Mold containment is generally necessary to stop mold from spreading. It may involve sealing off an area with plastics, shutting down HVAC or other systems that spread mold via air circulation, or even constructing airtight negative pressure chambers. By understanding how mold containment works, employees will often see the positives and understand the process.

3. Keep Employees in the Loop

Periodically issue updates about the changes your employees will see in their work areas as the containment process gets underway. Informal meetings or e-mails can help keep staff concerns to a minimum.

4. Designate a Contact Person

Name a point person in your organization. Make it clear that employees can contact this individual with any questions they may have as containment proceeds.

Take the time to address employee concerns, educate workers about mold removal and issue progress updates. If you do so, your employees will likely feel confident that their safety and their ability to work effectively will not be compromised. 5 Steps for Dealing With Damage Caused by Water

6/25/2018 (Permalink)

Water can be beautiful and relaxing. Unfortunately, it can also be completely unpredictable and create headaches for homeowners in South Oceanside, CA. Water damage is one of the most common issues plaguing homeowners. Whether it is from broken pipes, storm damage, or sewer backup, the most important part of the process when dealing with the situation is quick and efficient water cleanup. Delays could create conditions conducive to mold, mildew, and structural damage.

Dealing with cleaning can be stressful, but remembering the five steps – or the five Ds – can help you through the situation.

1) Disconnect all electronics and turn off the power. By removing electronics out of the water’s path quickly, you increase the chances of saving those items. In addition to electronics, move all the furniture, area rugs, and carpeting affected by the water damage.
2) Drain as much water as possible. While using a power extractor, such as a sump pump, is preferable, sometimes it is not the most feasible or safest option. Using mops, buckets, and towels can be just as effective.
3) Drying the area out is the most critical thing you can do to mitigate mold and bacteria growth. Once you have removed as much water as possible, use a dehumidifier and fan to circulate the air.
4) Disinfect the area once it has dried out. Stagnant water and moisture create a hotbed for breeding bacteria. Make sure you also include overhead beams and portions of the walls that were not affected.
5) Dispose of damaged items. Unfortunately, not all your things will survive. Keeping damaged items that can’t be disinfected increases the risk of mold and bacteria growth.

Dealing with water damage can feel overwhelming. Fortunately, in South Oceanside, CA there are repair and restoration experts available to assist you in the water cleanup process. Whether you choose to do it yourself or seek assistance, use the five Ds to get you started. Visit http://www.SERVPROfallbrooksouthoceanside.com for more information on water damage.

A flood of relief washes over you, as you watch the fire sprinklers turn on and douse the flames. Follow these steps to decrease the likelihood of a system malfunction:

• Inspect the system to confirm that there is no physical damage present. Make sure the valves are open and in good condition. Check the pipes for leaks and verify adequate system pressure.
• Maintain the individual components, such as lubricating the valves and removing any debris.
• Test the system to confirm it is in working order.

What to Do After Accidental Activation

Sometimes, regardless of adequate sprinkler maintenance, an error occurs. If the system accidentally goes off, take the following actions to reduce water damage:

• Turn off the water supply to the sprinkler system. As a safety precaution, turn off the main electricity to the building first.
• Open windows to ventilate the area and increase air flow.
• Call a water restoration specialist as soon as possible. The sooner the experts arrive, the faster your property is assessed, dried, cleaned and restored to preloss condition.
• Contact your commercial property insurance agent. Most losses from water damage are covered as a part of your policy.

When working correctly, fire sprinklers can save property and lives. As a business owner in South Oceanside, CA conducting regular sprinkler maintenance is crucial to protecting your livelihood. If an accidental activation occurs, contact a water restoration company as soon as possible to reduce further water damage and restore your property.

Keeping Calm After the Storm

6/13/2018 (Permalink)

Unfortunately, Mother Nature doesn’t take into account the hard work you’ve put in to get your business up and running. So when you’re hit with an unexpected storm that results in water damage, you may be at a loss as to what to do. Luckily, there are restoration experts that know exactly what to tear out of your business in order to ensure the damage is as minimal as possible.

Understanding Water Categories

An important part of storm restoration is assessing the destruction. The ability to tear out ruined material in a timely manner is important, so understanding the potential forms of damage is necessary. The categories of water are as follows:

• Category 1 - This situation involves a clean water source, such as a busted pipe or water heater, and cleanup is relatively quick and painless.
• Category 2 - Water responsible for this damage typically comes from a dishwasher or washing machine, and it is called “grey water.” There aren’t any dangerous contaminants, only detergent and/or dirt, making cleanup almost identical to Category 1.
• Category 3 – This is the most invasive level of water damage. It’s known as “black water” because it involves various contaminants and microorganisms that find their way in through sewage or outside sources. In this instance, a rebuilding process will likely need to be put into play, which can involve your insurance company and inevitably take more time.

Being Prepared

Ultimately, the best way to prepare yourself for storm restoration is to know how bad the aftermath could be. Do your research and find a company in your South Oceanside, CA that values quick response time, thorough evaluation, and practical methods of cleanup. The last thing you want is a company that decides to tear out material in your business without properly determining the extent of its damage.

If you experience water damage in your place of business, track down a restoration company early on. Doing so can help your business to maintain its success even when Mother Nature has different plans.

How To Clean Out a Fire-Damaged Computer Safely

5/29/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial How To Clean Out a Fire-Damaged Computer Safely Give SERVPRO a call after commercial fire damage.

An electrical fire can be incredibly hazardous, particularly when it involves fire-damaged electronics such as computers. If a fire doesn’t completely torch your device, the smoke and soot can damage the insides of your computer, rendering it unusable. Residual soot from the fire contains metal-corroding acids that can cause the device to malfunction. These acidic particles stick to the fan blades, circuit boards, and other essential components. Even if these materials are removed, any dust that accumulates in your computer can get sucked into the chemicals, making cleanup an arduous task.

Following Important Steps

To salvage their fire-damaged computers, residents of South Oceanside, CA are taking these critical steps:

1. Turn off your computer and unplug any external devices, such as your keyboard, mouse, printers, speakers, and monitor.
2. Carefully open your computer to remove any potentially damaged hardware. If in doubt, follow the instruction manual for your device on how to proceed safely.
3. Before cleaning, make sure your hands and face are covered with gloves and a dust mask. Soot from an electrical fire can be hazardous to your respiratory system.
4. Use a can of compressed air to meticulously blow dust out of the inside of your computer. Spray surfaces at a moderate distance and shoot short bursts of air, as opposed to a sustained stream. This prevents the cold compressed air from causing parts to frost over.

Putting Your Computer Back Together

Once the computer parts are thoroughly cleaned, it should be safe to place them in their proper locations. Turn the computer on. If your computer still isn’t working, it may be too late for repairs.

The clock is ticking, and the longer you wait the smaller the window becomes for you to conduct an effective computer cleanup. If you are still apprehensive about handling the situation yourself, contact a fire-damage restoration specialist to guide you through the process. No job is too big for trained professionals experienced in saving your precious valuables from electrical fire damage. Get Your Home Mold Problem Under Control

5/15/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Get Your Home Mold Problem Under Control Give SERVPRO a call if you notice mold growing in your home.

Many think of mold as an outdoor problem, but in truth, there’s no such thing as a mold-free home. There’s only a home free of the conditions required to allow mold spores in the air to flourish and grow. That’s why you can take precautions to keep your South Oceanside, CA home from turning into a breeding ground for black mold.

Prevention First

You don’t want to have a mold problem and then figure out how to fix it. It’s better to never have a mold problem at all through dedicated mold prevention. Water damage is one of the major culprits in mold growth; if you have mold, odds are you have a leak or have recently suffered flood damage. Here are a few ways to check for water damage that can lead to mold.

• Watch for dark spots on walls and ceilings. Dark spots are usually water damage caused by leaking roofs and windows, sometimes by damaged or leaking pipes. Don’t forget to check for out-of-the-way places, such as under sinks.
• Listen for dripping pipes and inspect periodically. As mentioned, damaged and leaking pipes can create an environment ripe for mold growth.
• Eliminate standing water. You might not think much of getting out of the shower and leaving a dripping mess, but that water can seep under your bathroom floor tiles and start mold breeding underneath the linoleum. Look for other sources of standing water, such as splashed dishwater or leaks beneath appliances.
• Control humidity. Your bathroom fan is a great way to get rid of mold-causing steam and condensation; your stove should also have a fan for the same reason. If your environment is extremely humid, invest in a dehumidifier.

Remediation Next

When mold prevention isn’t enough, you need remediation next. Mold remediation involves professionals assessing the extent of your mold problem and taking steps to eliminate as much as possible from your environment. Mold remediation specialists can also offer advice on further prevention after a cleanup. Visit http://www.SERVPROfallbrooksouthoceanside.com for more information on mold.

How and When Do I Maintain My Furnace?

5/10/2018 (Permalink)

Having a healthy furnace is crucial for those living in South Oceanside, CA during the cold weather months. Performing preventative maintenance saves homeowners the hassle and heartache that comes from fire cleaning and smoke cleaning efforts if a problem arises. It is essential to keep the furnace in good working order year-round.

Autumn

Before the temperature drops outside, take action with your furnace. Some important tasks are best done right before the cold weather hits:

• Replace or clean the furnace filter
• Make an appointment for your annual furnace cleaning and inspection with a reputable HVAC and furnace cleaning company

Winter

When the snow falls, your furnace works hard to keep you and your family warm. It is especially important during the winter to keep the following in mind:

• Change your furnace filter every 30-60 days
• If you have allergies, pets or smoke in your home, change the filter more often
• Be alert to any problems, such as a gas smell or unwanted change of temperature
• If a problem is noticed, immediately call a reputable HVAC and furnace company to inspect and fix the issue to avoid the need for a restoration and fire cleaning company later

Spring

As warmer weather sets in during the day, often your furnace is still working hard at night. During this time, the homeowner should take these actions:

• Continue to change the furnace filter regularly
• If the furnace was not cleaned and inspected in the fall, schedule the annual maintenance now

Summer

For those living in South Oceanside, CA you and your furnace are (hopefully!) getting a well-deserved break from the cold. Even though homeowners seldom consider heating in the summer, these few steps will make sure the furnace is healthy year-round:

• If you use air conditioning, an annual health check keeps the entire system running smoothly
• Be attentive and call a reputable HVAC and furnace company if you suspect any problems with your system

When it comes to furnace care, remember the old adage: An ounce of prevention (furnace maintenance) now is worth a pound of cure (heartache and fire cleaning) later. Visit http://www.SERVPROfallbrooksouthoceanside.com for more information on fire damage.

3 Strategies for Preventing Mold in Your Restaurant

4/30/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation 3 Strategies for Preventing Mold in Your Restaurant Call SERVPRO if you notice mold growth in your business.

Keeping your Fallbrook, CA restaurant clean is probably a high priority for you. Not only is cleanliness necessary for following local and federal food handling guidelines, it can make a positive first impression on customers who come to dine for the first time. One major factor in keeping your restaurant clean is preventing mold growth, and there are several strategies you can use to help keep your business fungi free.

1. Keep Humidity Low

High humidity can contribute to the development of mold, especially in spaces where there is also plenty of moisture. Your walk-in coolers, dishwashing areas and prep areas may all be vulnerable, so monitoring the environment in these areas is wise. Ensure that there is plenty of ventilation, keep windows open and mop up dishwashing or prep food water spills right away so mold does not have the chance to take hold and spread.

2. Maintain Your HVAC System

Mold spores exist naturally in the air; however, when they are given the right environment in which to settle and grow colonies, their spread can happen quickly. These spores can travel faster when they invade your HVAC system, so having it checked, cleaned and maintained at least twice a year can go a long way in preventing mold. Have a qualified technician check for air conditioning leaks that may encourage mold growth and have repairs or improvements made as needed.

3. Have Your Building Inspected for Leaks

Hidden leaks in your restaurant can create significant water damage over time and give mold the ideal environment in which to thrive. To find and resolve leaks, call in a qualified water damage and restoration company that can also advise you on how to solve any water leakage issues. Remember to have both the inside and outside of your property inspected, especially if you run water lines to manage patio misters or other water features for your restaurant.

One important aspect of keeping your Fallbrook, CA restaurant clean is preventing mold growth. Fortunately, taking a few simple proactive steps can stop the growth of fungi before it affects your business. Visit http://www.SERVPROfallbrooksouthoceanside.com for more information on mold.

Mold in a Nutshell

A Fungus

Mildew

You’re no doubt familiar with mildew, as you’ve probably run into this issue in your South Oceanside, CA bathroom. 3 Areas of Coverage To Check For If a Pipe Bursts in Your Home

3/18/2018 (Permalink)

If broken or leaky pipes flood your home in South Oceanside, CA the last thing you likely want to worry about is whether or not the incident is covered by your insurance. The answer usually depends on the situation. Some cases may be covered by homeowner’s insurance while others may not, so it is often important to know what to look for in your policy. Three places to start include clauses covering property coverage, additional living expenses, and dwelling coverage.

1. Property Coverage

When a flood in your home is caused by burst pipes, personal property such as furniture, clothing, jewelry, electronics, and other belongings can be damaged. These items, though, are likely covered under your homeowner’s insurance coverage.

2. Additional Living Expenses

Living expenses can often be the last thing on your mind if you are focused on how to fix broken pipes, but an incident like this can displace you from your home. Expenses including hotel rooms, meals, and travel can add up; the additional living expense coverage included in your insurance policy may protect you against these, though.

3. Dwelling Coverage

Floorboards, walls, and building structures can all be damaged should a pipe burst or leak in your home. This kind of damage and the costs required to repair it can be covered by the dwelling coverage that is included in your insurance policy.

While it is usually good to know where your insurance covers you, always make sure to stay on top of pipe maintenance in your home. In some cases, insurance companies may not cover any damage that occurs as a result of negligence. It can be important to replace old pipes, properly insulate pipes in cold weather, and check often for leaks or damage. Not only can this help to prevent a burst pipe or flood in the first place, but it can also help to make sure you are covered if something does happen. 3 Steps for Recovering From Commercial Storm Damage

3/13/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial 3 Steps for Recovering From Commercial Storm Damage When your knee deep in water, call the experts at SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside.

Unsure of what to do if your business is affected by flooding or water damage? From water extraction to the tear out of wet materials, taking immediate action is imperative for lessening the damage that a commercial property suffers. Whether the building needs immediate storm restoration or you want to be prepared in the case of an unexpected emergency, knowing the procedure can help get your business back up and running after a water disaster.

1. Removing the Water

Before affected areas can be completely cleaned or repaired, standing water must be extracted. Depending on the size of the flooded area, mopping up excess liquid may be sufficient. Larger disasters may require the use of a wet vacuum system or pump to clear out the mess.

2. Beginning the Process of Drying Out

Drying out commercial spaces that have suffered water damage is imperative for squashing the growth and spread of mold and bacteria. The longer that interior areas are left to dry on their own, the more severe damage can become, and repairs can grow more costly. The most important aspect in drying up sodden spaces is getting the air moving. This can be achieved through opening doors and windows to circulate the air naturally, as long as the humidity isn’t too high. Air can be forcefully moved with the aid of fans.

3. Restoring Your Commercial Property

Getting a storm-damaged building back into working order may require the tear out and replacement of some structures within the property. Sometimes this entails the removal of a small section of drywall, while in more severe instances, large flooring space or an entire wall may need to go due to major saturation or contamination. Flooded floors often require the replacing of carpet, and sometimes hardwood may also become too damaged to salvage.

Recovering from water damage can feel overwhelming. A water remediation professional in South Oceanside, CA can offer assistance and peace of mind. Whether your commercial space requires water removal and drying or the tear out of structures, following the necessary procedures and precautions make recovery possible.

Mold and Mildew: Bad Smells and Where To Find Them

2/19/2018 (Permalink)

Building owners in South Oceanside, CA quickly realize that mold is much easier to smell than it is to locate. The mold smell can be strong and overpowering without being directly visible, leaving you to wonder just where exactly it’s coming from. Following is a discussion about what causes a mold smell, mildew smell, fungus smell or any variety of the three and how best to find the sources throughout your commercial property.

What Makes Mold and Mildew Odor So Distinct?

Mold and its similar species are quick to grow in areas with a lot of moisture and humidity. Mildew and mold thrive in such places as they’re both different kinds of fungi that need the presence of water to survive and multiply. These fungal inhabitants create their smells through the basic function of their existence, meaning any time they eat and reproduce the smell becomes stronger. Mildew brings less of an odorous presence with lighter, musty smells, but moldy smells become quite overbearing the more they continue to grow and spread around your building.

Where Can You Find Non-Visible Mold on Your Property?

The mold smell itself often leads you closer to its original growth point, though it’s not always an exact indicator. Thermal cameras are available these days to help find previously undetected sources of water, but mold is generally found in common areas like:

*Kitchens, bathrooms and other sources of consistent water usage
*Air conditioning units or water heaters
*The walls below leaky windows or door frames
*Cellars or basements where light to heavy flooding occurs regularly
*Refrigerators or freezers that create high condensation in dark corners

When you’re trying to find the presence of mold in your South Oceanside, CA property, following your nose towards the mold smell is a great first step. However, removing the fungus smell, mildew smell and any other similar odors that are harder to pinpoint requires checking these suggested places to find their non-visible locations. Once the mold is found, call remediation specialists to clear out your building. Visit  http://www.SERVPROfallbrooksouthoceanside.com for more information on mold.

3 Tips for Maintaining Your Home’s Furnace

2/14/2018 (Permalink)

The last thing you want is for your home’s heating system to go out right in the middle of winter. Worse than that, a fire could break out if you are not careful. It is always preferable to avoid fire cleaning services when possible, so follow these few maintenance tips to keep your furnace in great condition all year long.

1. Replace Filters Often

Every heating system has a filter that allows you to breathe in clean air free of contaminants. Over time, the filter becomes dirty, making it less effective at filtering out dust and other pieces of debris. You should replace your furnace’s filter once every few months. You may need to do it once a month if you use your HVAC system regularly.

2. Clean Vents and Furnace Ducts

For this kind of maintenance, you may need to hire professionals. Experts qualified in fire cleaning can usually handle this work. Too much dust accumulation in the vents can damage components and make the system not run as efficiently as it should. During this inspection, the professional can also provide a more thorough examination to see if there are any damaged parts. Even a loose belt can lead to a dampening in performance. It is better to do this kind of housework than have to eventually deal with smoke cleaning.

3. Have an Annual Inspection

In the event your furnace seems to be working all right, you should still have someone come out at least once a year to check everything out. This inspection should take place right before the winter season. Most furnace maintenance professionals are busy during the winter because that is when everyone wants the work done. Additionally, if you wait until winter, then you may have to go a day or two without your furnace. When the temperatures drop, it is not fun to be without a heater.

Avoid needing fire cleaning in South Oceanside, CA by taking care of your furnace. Ultimately, it is much more affordable to pay for maintenance than to pay for repairs. Visit  http://www.SERVPROfallbrooksouthoceanside.com for more information on fire damage.

How to Handle Water Cleanup After a Fire

2/14/2018 (Permalink)

After the event of a fire, you may think that the fire cleanup is all you need to worry about. However, firefighters must battle the flames with water, so although they are extinguishing the fire, they are also creating the need for water cleanup.

Professionals in South Oceanside, CA should be contacted quickly to help deal with both types of damage. Here are three things you can do to help:

1. Appraise the Damage

A fire in a company’s building can be devastating because of the destruction of the workspace and equipment. It’s important for you to contact your insurance company so that you can recover as much of the cost as possible. Assess the situation and determine the damage that was done. The fire may have destroyed many things, but anything such as equipment, floors, and walls could merely be soggy. Make sure to document anything that was damaged so that you can recover most of the cost.

2. Ventilate the Building

After assessing the damage, it’s wise to get started on the restoration process. Be sure to check with officials before reentering the building, because there might be some safety issues. Once you have been given the all clear, go ahead and start creating some airflow. This can help with smoke cleanup, as the ventilation will clear the air.

3. Thoroughly Clean Salvageable Items

Although drying out items is an important part of water cleanup, it’s also vital to thoroughly clean everything you can to prevent mold and other issues. Fire restorers can bring in specialized equipment to help with the process. Help the professionals by offering any information or aid needed.

Once most of the ventilation and cleaning has begun, the restoration company may focus on renovating walls and floors that have become unsafe from all the damage. Once this is complete, you can look forward to opening your business once more. Visit  http://www.SERVPROfallbrooksouthoceanside.com for more information on commercial fire damage.

What To Expect When Faced With Flood Damage

1/18/2018 (Permalink)

When it comes to dealing with water damage, it is essential that home and business owners in Fallbrook, CA take immediate action. The longer structures remain submerged, the greater the risk that you may need to tear out and restore significant portions of the building. Here are the six steps to expect during the post-storm restoration process:

1. Contact a professional restoration crew.

Many companies have 24-hour call centers that can get you in touch with a local service. Make sure to have the following information on hand:

• Contact information
• Insurance information
• Street address of flooded site
• Time damage occurred
• Cause of flooding

2. Damage assessment.

Technicians should perform a comprehensive inspection of the extent and type of damage and take steps to move or block off furniture or other items to prevent further deterioration.

3. Water Removal.

Industrial pumps are used to extract as much standing water as possible, minimizing secondary water damage and mold growth. A crew may need to tear out carpeting as well to protect the subfloor.

4. Drying and Dehumidification.

Water retained in porous wall and floor materials can cause warping and mold growth. Technicians use specialized industrial air movers and dehumidifiers to dissipate moisture.

5. Disinfection and Odor Removal.

Air scrubbers and fogging equipment are used to deodorize and sanitize walls and furniture, using antimicrobial and disinfectant treatments. Professional cleaning services can often help to restore personal items, such as clothing or photographs.

6. Rehabilitation.

At this stage, a professional team can help you to identify any repairs needed to return the premises to pre-flooding condition, including whether you need to tear out portions of the structure that may have been compromised.

Storm restoration is a multi-step process that requires promptness and technical expertise. It is a good idea to keep an emergency contact on hand for a professional service in Fallbrook, CA that specializes in flooding and water damage.

The Importance of Cleaning Mold Quickly

1/18/2018 (Permalink)

Spot mold on your walls or carpet, and your first instinct might be to leave your commercial property and call a mold remediation company. While the unsightly stains might seem bad enough, there are other, more important risks to keep in mind. Check out these three reasons why you should schedule a mold cleanup as soon as possible after a pipe burst.

1. It Can Spread

Wet, warm and humid conditions make mold thrive. Water from a broken pipe can cause mold to sprout if it's left standing longer than 24 hours. It does so by releasing microscopic spores into the air that can travel all over your property. If the problem is left unattended, it can spread to several rooms. Depending on the location of the damaged pipe, you might be encouraging it to grow every time you turn on a sink or flush a toilet.

2. It's Unhealthy

Breathing in mold can have negative health effects, especially among the young or elderly. Black mold in particular may even result in visits to a doctor. Mold remediation specialists will tackle an outbreak from several angles to make sure you, your employees and your clients remain safe.

3. It's Unsightly

Mold can create stains that set in your carpet and walls. Simply drying the water from a pipe burst is often not sufficient to get your business back in optimal condition. Experts might need to install new flooring or drywall to remove all traces of an infestation. Business owners in Fallbrook, CA who allow mold to fester end up paying a significant amount of money repairing their property.

A pipe burst shouldn't be taken lightly. The mold that can result might be viral, unhealthy and aesthetically damaging. Schedule an emergency mold cleanup quickly after a disaster to make your commercial property safe.

Tackle Water Damage

Moisture is the best friend of mold. It is what allows it to begin growing. In a home, the biggest cause of moisture is water damage. This could be from a leaky roof, window or door. Fix roofing, broken windows or ill-fitting doors.
Address plumbing issues as soon as possible.
Have inspections done of floors, walls and ceilings after a water leak.
Waterproof your basement to prevent leaks.

You should always handle any moisture issue as soon as possible.

Mold spores travel in the air, so one of the best mold prevention steps is to clean your HVAC system. Mold spores can get trapped and then carried throughout your home every time your system runs. If humidity is the issue, get a dehumidifier to keep levels low. This will help keep moisture levels from getting too high in your home.

Understanding Mildew

Mold and mildew are both fungi, a classification that also includes mushrooms. Like mushrooms, mold and mildew thrive in moist conditions, including damp basements and places where water has been allowed to accumulate.

Mold and mildew also spread quite easily, so once the problem takes hold, it can be very hard to cure without professional advice and guidance. A small patch of mildew growing on your bathroom wall could easily grow out of control if you leave it alone, so you should not wait if you see the telltale signs.

Mildew is actually a type of mold, one with a flat growth pattern that generally remains on the surface where it is growing. That flat growth pattern makes mildew easier to remove than other types of mold, although professional remediation is still strongly recommended.

What is White Mold?

White mold, on the other hand, is what you see growing on food that has been left out too long. If you ever cleaned your fridge and found mysterious white hairs, you were probably looking at white mold.

White mold also grows easily on walls and crawlspaces, and inside permanent structures. You should look carefully for this common type of mold every time you clean, and definitely every time you go in your basement or crawlspace.

Mildew, on the other hand, is typically found on damp surfaces, including wallpaper that has been exposed to moisture, fabrics and various moist spaces around your home. While mildew is not as dangerous as some other forms of mold, however, it is still unsightly and it can still trigger reactions in those with respiratory conditions or compromised immune systems.

Types of Household Mold

There are a number of common mold types that invade houses, but those household molds are only a small subset of the mold varieties that exist in nature. More than 10,000 species of mold can survive indoors, but most homeowners will see only a handful of those varieties.

Some of these mold species can be quite harmful, but the most common form of dangerous mold is toxic black mold. Also known as Alternaria, toxic black mold typically grows on shower enclosures, on walls, under sinks and around windows. Toxic black mold can also take hold in other damp places, including basements and crawlspaces with a history of past flooding.

Alternaria

Despite its common name, Alternaria mold is not always black. Toxic black mold can also appear dark brown or grey, but no matter what its color it typically has a down-like or wooly texture.

Prolonged exposure to toxic black mold can trigger asthma attacks, allergic reactions and other serious health problems. If you suspect that black mold is growing in your home, you should contact a mold remediation specialist as quickly as possible. Like all forms of mold, toxic black mold grows quickly, and the health problems will get more serious as the mold spores grow larger.

Aspergillus

Aspergillus is another common form of mold, and it is sometimes mistaken for the more serious toxic black mold. Like toxic black mold, Aspergillus can be grey, brown or black, but it may also appear in colors like yellow, green or white.

Aspergillus mold generally grows on insulation, paper products, walls and clothing. Like toxic black mold, Aspergillus can trigger an allergic reaction and cause problems for those with weakened immune systems and preexisting respiratory problems.

Cladosporium

While most molds grow best in warm humid conditions, Cladosporium grows well in cool areas. This type of mold generally shows up on fabrics, including curtains and carpets, as well as wooden surfaces like floorboards and cabinetry. Cladosporium is typically black or olive green in color, and it can also trigger a number of respiratory conditions.

Penicillium

In the right venue, Penicillium is a lifesaver, but in your home it can be a problem. As the name implies, Penicillium is the mold that was originally used to make lifesaving antibiotics, and it is still an important drug.

Unfortunately, penicillium also grows well on surfaces that have been exposed to water, including carpets, wallpaper, insulation and old mattresses. Penicillium is typically blue or green, and it has a distinctive strong musty odor. Like other forms of mold, penicillium exposure can trigger allergic reactions in vulnerable people.

Stachybotrys Chartarum

You may hear Stachybotrys chartarum referred to as black mold, mainly because of its distinctive color, and this is the most serious and most dangerous form of household mold. That danger has earned Stachybotrys chartarum its other moniker - toxic black mold.

Unlike other forms of household mold, which are unsightly and dangerous mainly to those with respiratory problems and damaged immune systems, Stachybotrys chartarum releases a number of toxic compounds, and these compounds can be dangerous even to healthy adults and children.

These toxic compounds are known as mycotoxins, and they can produce some very serious health problems. These health issues include chronic sinus infections, difficulty breathing, asthma attacks, allergic reactions, depression and fatigue. If you or a family member has experienced any of these symptoms, you should have your home examined for toxic black mold.

A mold remediation expert can check your home and look for the telltale signs of toxic black mold. Toxic black mold has a distinctive musty odor, and it typically grows in places that are consistently damp, like basements prone to flooding, crawlspaces with water intrusion problems, around leaking pipes and inside of air conditioning ducts.

If you discover mold or mildew growing in your home, time is of the essence. Contacting a professional mold and mildew remediation service right away can mean the difference between a simple repair and months of hard work and expense.

When you have mold problems, you need the help of a trained professional, and you can find that professional at SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside. We can help you protect your home and the integrity of your property, and we have the expertise needed to safeguard the health and family. Just give us a call at (760) 451-0600.

How a Commercial Fire Damage Company Will Restore Your Building

10/23/2017 (Permalink)

How a Commercial Fire Damage Company Will Restore Your Building

If your office or commercial building had an electrical fire or a utility room fire, you need to call a professional fire restoration company. Soot damage and smoke damage are common. These will give your building a horrible odor that can linger for a long time. You may even have blackened or charred walls and ceilings. The firefighters may have broken holes in your walls. Firefighters sometimes do this in order to make sure that the fire is not burning in between the two sides of the wall. Firefighters may shatter windows in order to spray water on the inside of the room from the fire truck’s fire hose. Holes may also be caused by the fire itself. Commercial fire damage comes in other forms as well. For example, your home may become flooded when the firefighters put out the fire using the fire truck’s fire hose. Your building can also get flooded when the fire suppression and fire sprinkler system goes off.

Make an emergency call to a fire restoration company. A fire restoration company will usually arrive as soon as possible to take care of the commercial fire damage. You should not enter your building before you call them, because there may be hazards, such as broken glass.

A fire restoration company will take a look at your building in order to find out how much damage was caused. They will look for the cause of the fire and find out whether it was an electrical fire or a utility room fire. They will plan a strategy for the restoration and renovation of your building.

First, the commercial fire damage company will take care of the water in your building. The fire damage service will use flood pumps to pump out the water in your building that was spread by the fire truck’s fire hose or by the fire suppression and fire sprinkler system. They will remove any excess moisture from your building and will make sure your home is completely dry. Before they do this step, the restoration company will likely board up any holes or broken windows. The reason this might be done before the water is removed is so that further water does not enter the building when it rains in addition to the water that is there because of the fire truck's fire hose. Wooden boards or tarps can be used to board up your building.

The next step is dealing with the soot damage and the smoke damage. The commercial fire damage company will clean up your walls and furniture from ashes and soot. The fire damage company will remove any bad odors that may be lingering in your building, a common form of soot damage and smoke damage. Only professionals have the equipment to deal with soot damage and smoke damage.

The fire damage company will then start repairing the structure of your building. They will start removing burnt parts of your walls and ceiling. The fire damage company will replace certain boards and beams. They will make sure that your ceiling is firm and strong, and they will do the same for your floor. They will repaint your building so that everything looks beautiful again.

Before they leave, the fire restoration company will explain the cause of the electrical fire or the utility room fire. They will give you advice on how to prevent another electrical fire or utility room fire. They will make sure that your fire suppression and fire sprinkler system works. They will also explain how to maintain your fire suppression and fire sprinkler system.

Looking Out for Water Damage and What to Do When it Happens

There's little doubt that when it comes to property damage, water is perhaps the most destructive force out there. Even if a person hasn't dealt with the ultimate destructive force of flood damage, chances are that everyone has had to deal with some form of lesser water damage in their time as a homeowner. Repairing damage from water in the business or a flooded home from things like a supply line break whether can be costly. We'll go through some of the process of water damage and how it occurs, as well as some of the best ways that a professional water restoration company are essential to mitigation or repair.

First, some tips on detecting initial water in the home:

It Can Be Hidden

A pipe break is not necessarily as easy to detect as one might think. Flood damage can be hidden in a variety of places from walls to floorboards to even the outer portions of the flooded home, and it takes on a variety of different attributes depending on where the flood damage occurred.

There are some key elements that point to possible flood damage in the home. They include:

Discoloration

Look for brownish discoloration on areas like the ceiling or rust discoloration on certain appliances as well. Check walls for bubbling or cracking paint.

Water Accumulation

Likely the most obvious sign of a possible pipe break, etc. Check for any areas of standing water in the home or business.

Texture Changes

Check for buckling or sagging in areas that especially have wood floors. If wood has swelled up and separated, it means it has expanded, which is also a sign of water damage.

Odors

Walls in particular can be prone to moisture absorption. This usually results in a change in smell as well.

Now that we've given some brief tips on what to look for, let's go into what can be done about it and how a restoration company provide mitigation of damage, take care of pipe breaks or supply line breaks, and in general assist in necessary water cleanup.

Don't Wait!

Don't delay in calling in a professional restoration company when one finds water damage. Any delay can exacerbate the issue and prove very costly. Prompt intervention is key to dealing with a flooded home. Water in a business has other expenses too, such as needing to close up shop.

The Process

A professional restoration company typically has a tried and true methodology for dealing with damages.

1. Assessment
The professionals will work to identify and stop the water source, be it from a pipe break or supply line break. They will then inspect the entire property for a damage assessment. After, they move and block items such as furniture--or expensive equipment in the case of water in a business setting--to prevent further water damage.

Water Removal/Water Cleanup

If the home requires extensive cleanup and restoration, many restoration companies offer a move out service to protect all belongings.
Once done, they will use powerful submersible pumps to take care of the worst of the water cleanup, as well as high-efficiency wet/dry vacuums. This is not only mitigation of damages but reduces drying time. They will additionally inspect the carpet to determine if it should be removed for protection of the sub-floor.

Drying

Once water removal is done the drying process begins. This is done because many materials in a flooded home still retain some water. Dehumidifiers are used to mitigate secondary damage such as warped floors, and air flow movers are used to accelerate drying.

Cleaning

Many companies also offer professional-grade cleaning services of both the property and belongings such as furniture that may have become damaged from water in the home. They'll use a variety of products to clean and deodorize the home or business.

Trust the Professionals

When it comes to water cleanup and restoration, whether it's water in the home or water in the business, a pipe or supply line break, it's important get the right help. Always use qualified services for proper restoration and mitigation of water damage.

Commercial Fire Damage

10/3/2017 (Permalink)

Commercial Fire Damage

Every firefighter who responds to the blaze in your building must utilize fire suppression equipment and tactics available to him or her to control and extinguish the fire. These measures could include spraying water from the fire hose to dousing the blaze with foam stored inside the fire truck.

After the electrical fire, utility room fire, or fire from another source is put out, you may be left with extensive fire damage, soot damage, and smoke damage with which to cope. You can get your building's fire sprinkler system inspected and cleaned and start the fire restoration process by retaining commercial fire damage contractors to take over this monumental undertaking for you.

Extensive Cleanup after a Firefighter

You may not appreciate the full scope of what the commercial fire damage cleanup process can be until you are confronted with a fire restoration endeavor of your own. It is only after your current fire suppression measures have failed you that you realize how devastating fire damage, soot damage, and smoke damage can truly be on a building.

You also are probably more than disappointed in the fact that your fire sprinkler system failed to extinguish the electrical fire or utility room fire that destroyed your business. You may wonder how this fire suppression measure failed and whether or not you should have had it inspected and serviced by a fire restoration crew a long time ago.

As the old adage says, however, hindsight is always 20/20, which is why you should focus on the future by initiating the fire restoration process immediately after the last firefighter has packed up and the last fire truck has departed the scene. Looking at the water and foam left behind by the fire hose, you realize that fire damage, smoke damage, and soot damage are all more than you can handle on your own. You can have it dealt with swiftly and professionally by retaining the services of a commercial fire damage service today.

Commercial fire damage contractors know what kind of soot damage and smoke damage can be left behind by the water and spray from a fire hose. A firefighter must use the chemicals and water from the fire hose and fire truck to put out the blaze. There is no fire suppression alternative but to rely on the resources found on the fire truck and sprayed out through the fire hose to put out an electrical fire or utility room fire of that size.

Still, the fire damage left behind can be galling to look at or imagine how it will be cleaned up in the coming days or weeks. When you realize that you cannot service a broken fire sprinkler system to head off a future utility room fire or electrical fire, you need to retain the services of a commercial fire damage crew to come to your business today and take over this restoration work for you.

Fortunately, these services are typically available around-the-clock for your convenience even if the fire happens in the middle of the night. You never know if or when the fire sprinkler system in your business might fail you, in fact. You need to know that you can contact restoration professionals who are ready to respond even if you call during the middle of the night, on the weekends, or during holidays.

The contractors whom you call upon will respond quickly and begin formulating a plan of action to reverse or cleanup the damages left in your building. You can look forward to better fire suppression methods and a building that is free from smoke, soot, and water damage left behind by the fire crews.

A fire can take your business out of commission for weeks or months. You can get it back up and running and restore your building by hiring professionals to clean up the damage caused by the fire itself and the firefighters who came to help you.

The Aftermath of a Storm

10/3/2017 (Permalink)

The Aftermath of a Storm

A storm is a violent disturbance of the atmosphere with strong winds that are accompanied usually by thunder, rain, lightning, and snow. Instances of storms are on the rise, the latest being the IRMA hurricane that hit the eastern Caribbean coast. Hurricanes bring with them such issues like a hurricane damage, ice damming, river flooding, tornadoes, snowstorms, flooding, and ice damage. Storm damages on properties and buildings can be as a result of flash floods, roof leaks, structure damages, and roof damage.

Forms of damages that accompany storms
• Wind damage
• Hurricane damage
• Water damage
• Ice dams
• Ice damages
• Roof damage

The process to restore your home after a wind damage or flooding requires one to use services of a restoration company that will ensure that the home restoration process is done professionally.

The following are the steps of a storm remediation.
i. Emergency contact: In a storm restoration, the first step you should take is to ensure emergency contact to your local restoration company. Emergency contact should be made as soon as the storm subsides to initiate the process of restoration. Restoration companies provide their services on a 24/7 basis making it possible for you to get in touch with them at any time of the day. Among the information that you should relay to the restoration company includes the level of roof damage that could be determined by the presence of a roof leak. Roof leaks and ice dams call for a roof repair. You should also inform them of the level of flood water and amount of ground water.

ii. Prioritize your health and safety first: Flooding disrupts power sources, which may cause electrocution to individuals. Immediately the restoration personnel are on the site, they should begin the process of storm remediation. The process depends on the levels of river flooding, wind damage, hail damage, levels of flood water, and ice damage. Flood pumps can be used to get rid of flood water and ground water that has the risk of damaging your property. Blocking of broken water pipes and fixing frozen pipes is necessary in limiting water inflow. Inspecting the roof for roof leaks is also important since water damages may occur due to ice damming that provides natural water blockage.

iii. Documentation is necessary in a storm restoration process as it captures the extent of such issues like water damage, roof damage, hail damage, ice damage, and hurricane damage. Documented information on storm damage helps victims in filling their insurance claim forms. You should document the damages as soon as you are safe and the storm is over. Documentation of damages due to ice damage, hail damage, hurricane damages, and wind damages can be done through photographs and recorded videos.

iv. You should contact your insurance company agent: Contacting your insurance agent ensures that there is a formal inspection and documentation of damages. Insurance policies should cover all costs of a storm remediation. Such costs associated with storm damages include cost of water restoration, home restoration, and storm restoration.

v. Seek Federal Disaster Assistance: When storms such as IRMA strike, they cause destruction and huge losses to businesses. The federal government assists victims of hurricane damage, wind damage, hail damage, river flooding, ice damming, and ice dams. Ground water and flood water can also be very destructive. The federal government will come to your rescue by facilitating such remedies like roof repair, heating of frozen pipes, home restoration, water restoration, storm restoration, and purchase of flood pumps to combat flooding. Roof repair will fix minor roof leaks if they exist but a new roof may be needed if the damage is severe.

vi. Management of damages: This process involves addressing the various damages suffered such as roof damage, water damage, wind damage, hail damage, and hurricane damage that come in the form of storm damage. Heating up frozen pipes after ice damming and purchasing of flood pumps should be a priority. This stage is where elaborate home restoration steps are taken. Hail damage and ice damage are responsible for roof damage and you will need to carry out roof repairs. Ice damming leads to ice dams and frozen pipes that need heat up to restore water supply. Ensure that during a water restoration process, you use dehumidifiers and flood pumps to eliminate ground water and flood water.

The success of home restoration will depend on the storm remediation steps taken to facilitate water restoration. You can avoid losses due to river flooding through compliance to early warning systems.

How To Make Water Damage Less Overwhelming

8/21/2017 (Permalink)

How To Make Water Damage Less Overwhelming

Given the severe consequences of acting slowly when there is water in a home, it's no wonder that water cleanup can at first seem so overwhelming. Few businesses or homes are equipped with the necessary tools to engage in meaningful and complete water cleanup. It's natural to feel helpless when you see water in a home or water in a business. It pours over everything, touches valuable property and even electronics, and seems to spread as quickly as fire, damaging all it touches.

The purpose of professional water cleanup is to make water cleanup more manageable, efficient, and complete. When faced with water damage, the quickest way to bring things back to a manageable level is to call on water damage restoration experts. Not only are they well-versed in the mechanics of mitigation, drying, and cleaning, but they have encountered these situations before and know exactly what they need for a speedy cleanup.

No matter how severe the water in the home or the water in the business is, it's no match for an experienced, well-trained restoration company crew. If there's water in your home or water in your business, there's one answer: Call a restoration company. They know what to do.

Before arrival

Mitigation, drying, and restoration will begin once the restoration company is on the scene, but there are a few helpful things you can do while you wait. Depending on the level of the water in the home, or the area it covers, you might be able to prevent further damage by removing objects out of harm's way. As long as you can safely remove the object from the path of the water, this is a quick way to prevent further water damage while waiting for the mitigation and restoration company to arrive.

If the area of the water is confined, you can tidy up a bit before the crew arrives to your flooded home or if there is water in your business that is confined to a single area, you can quickly browse around to see any clues as to where the water might be coming from. Restoration will obviously be easiest if the water is confined to one small space. Sometimes when there is a supply line break or a pipe break, there may only be water in a single room.

If the water in your business or home is from flood damage, it might be more tricky and there might be less you can do while waiting for the restoration team to arrive. It still helps to scan the areas and take note of as much as you can so that you can well inform the mitigation team when they arrive.

Turning on air circulation systems, such as an air conditioner, can sometimes help begin early drying, too. If the flow of water has stopped, drying before crews get there can help some. Wipe away water in areas where no electrical appliances exist. You can also mop water off floors. If the water continues to pour into the building or home, drying can be impossible. In this case, it's best to wait.

Professionals are there for a reason

Professionals exist to help make your life easier. If you want to avoid flood damage from a flooded home, supply line break, pipe break, or leaky appliance, sometimes it's best to face the ordeal with professionals at your side. They can quickly prevent further flood damage to a flooded home or quickly identify and stop a supply line break or a pipe break. Professionals prevent water damage and damage from a pipe break or supply line break in a way that a novice cleaning crew just can't. The goal is to not only stop the source of the flood damage from a flooded home, but to restore possessions back to their original condition. Restoration is much faster and less overwhelming when the professionals are on your side.

What You Should Know About Fire Damage Restoration

You may have heard of commercial fire damage services, but you might not know what their services entail. Fire damage can cause extensive damage and reduce your valuables to ashes. This is where fire damage restoration services come in. When fire in the home or fire in the business strikes, you need to salvage whatever you can to avoid further losses. To do this, you need to act first. Fire cleanup is therefore critical towards preserving what is left after a fire.

Commercial fire damage companies have trained technicians. These professionals are skilled in providing fire damage restoration to deal with a fire in the home or fire in the business. Fire cleanup services are time sensitive. This is why these firms operate round the clock. They are also trained to deal with the smoke smell, soot damage and smoke damage.

A certified restoration company hires technicians who have gone through training from organizations such as the Cleaning and Restoration certification (IICRC). With proper training, these fire experts are able to offer fire cleanup services. A professional restoration company will also provide drying services. Water is used to put out fire, and this leaves behind water damage.

Fire damage restoration services also include water removal. Lingering moisture can provide a good breeding ground for mold and other fungi. Commercial fire damage companies are also experts in water and mold removal. The three services go hand in hand. The smoke smell, soot damage and smoke damage also need to be addressed. Soot can discolor and damage household items. When hiring a restoration company, ask about their soot damage, smoke smell and smoke damage removal strategies.

When you experience a fire in the home or fire in the business, board up services are crucial. A board up is one of the best ways to secure your home or business and to prevent further damage. Fire damage leaves certain areas exposed. Board up services can be used to secure the roof, windows and doorways. If these areas are left unguarded, intruders can access the premises and cause more damage.

A fire in the home or fire in the business can leave you destabilized. Your primary goal should be to resume your normal life. This is why you should bring in a fire damage restoration firm. The faster they conduct the fire cleanup, the sooner you can move back to your home or office.

In most cases, people wait for long before conducting fire cleanup services after a fire damage. This is ill advised because the soot damage and smoke damage can discolor your items in a matter of hours. The smoke smell is also a health hazard. On your own, you may not be in a position to deal with the damage in good time.

Commercial fire damage companies have the experience and tools needed to conduct thorough fire cleanup services. These technicians will begin by inspecting the fire in the home or fire in the business damage. They will put up board up services to prevent further exposure. These professionals will also use special cleaning agents to get rid of the smoke damage and soot damage.

Deodorization services are also done to get rid of the smoke smell. If smoke is left unattended, it can easily seep through the walls. Professional commercial fire damage companies can use thermal foggers for extensive smoke damage. This is a machine that releases odor-neutralizing particles. These particles neutralize the smoke leaving behind a fresh atmosphere free from smoke odor. Thermal foggers are very effective and can get rid of the smoke speedily.

While fire can leave extensive damage, there are measures to prevent home and business owners from incurring further losses. Immediate fire damage restoration services can help salvage the damage on the items and property. This is why it is prudent to engage the services of fire damage professionals. A restoration company can ensure that you resume your normal day to day activities in a short period of time.

Mold Removal: How to Safely Get Rid of Mold From Your Home

Mold Removal: How to Safely Get Rid of Mold From Your Home

Mold removal involves the process of getting rid of any visible mold in a building. This is an important process for an infested building since it maintains a healthy environment for the occupants and reduces further spread. Before mold removal and remediation can take place, it's important to get to the cause and ensure proper mitigation or else the mold growth will still re-occur. It's also important to note that the remediation of mold damage can be complicated or simple depending on the type of building, the level of contamination, and also infestation.

When the mold in a home covers an area of more than 10 square feet, then you will need to seek the help of a commercial mold damage expert for the mold growth removal and deodorization services. Whether the removal of black mold, mildew, dry rot, or fungus is performed in the bathroom, basement, or attic, it's important to ensure proper mitigation so that it doesn't spread to other non-contaminated areas. The restoration company will guide you through.

The level of contamination also plays a role in the amount you have to pay and whether you will need to seek the services of a commercial mold restoration company. Also, it's important to remember that it's the amount of settled spores and the type of mold, mildew, or fungus that matters. If you suspect that you're having a mold problem but you don't see any visible dry rot or black mold growth you should consider testing the air.

Steps to effective mold removal

Before cleaning the mold damage, you should determine whether the mold growth behind the wall, attic, or floor is a cosmetic or structural concern. To achieve this, you could ask for a mold test and if levels are high, consider seeking the assistance of commercial mold damage experts. When cleaning mold in a home, particularly black mold, you should avoid releasing mold spores into the air.

For effective remediation of mold damage, you should enclose the affected areas with plastic to contain the spores and dust from spreading. The restoration company technicians wear a full face protective mask to guard against dust and the smelly odor which can only be remediated through deodorization. When working on small amounts of mold growth behind a wall, the remediation will involve the ordinary household detergent.

Although you might have properly cleaned the area, it can still be stained if you are dealing with dry rot or black mold infestation. In such cases, the best mitigation practice is to cover such an area with a good latex paint or get in touch with a reliable commercial mold damage expert if you aren't sure how to go about it.

Wood is also one of the favorite spots for mildew, fungus, dry rot, and black mold infestation, and if you realize there is mold growth behind a wall, you should consider replacing the attic insulation, floor joists, and wall studs. If this is left unchecked, it could lead to serious damage, and with the mildew, fungus, or smelly odor, you will have to seek deodorization services from a commercial mold damage restoration company.

Mold removal from furniture

Furniture is always a big concern, especially when it's infested with mold in a home. One of the biggest factors that contribute to such infestation is mold growth behind a wall. That said, if you aren't careful, you will only realize mold growth when smelly odor begins to emanate from fungus or black rot. If that's the case and mold in a home has affected your furniture, try removing the mold damage using detergents and use deodorization to get rid of the smelly odor.

5 Tips for Preventing Mold in an Oceanside Home

Getting rid of mold is one thing, but preventing it is something else. As with other problems of home ownership, the best defense against mold is a good offense.

Taking some proactive steps now can prevent mold in your oceanside or beachfront home later. Here are five timely tips for keeping mold at bay, so you can enjoy the cool ocean breezes and spend more time in the sand.

1. Remove Wet Objects Right Away

From saltwater-soaked beach towels to wet patio furniture cushions, it is important to keep damp items out of your beachfront home. Mold can start growing in an amazingly short period, so every minute you wait is one more minute your home is at risk.

Keeping a hamper by the front door can help you keep those damp items out of your home. Instituting rules for guests and family members can help as well, and go a long way toward keeping your oceanside or beachfront home mold-free.

2. Clean, Disinfect and Dry

Mold loves damp places, and it can grow fast. That is why cleaning and disinfecting your home is so important. Regular cleaning and proper disinfection are always necessary, but it is particularly critical for owners of oceanside and beachfront properties.

Keep your cleaning supplies nearby, disinfect surfaces and always dry everything carefully. Denying mold the damp spots it needs is the best way to protect your home from severe damage.

3. Increase Airflow Throughout Your Home

Improving airflow can go a long way toward keeping mold out of your beachfront or oceanside home, so start by assessing the amount of airflow you currently have and go from there. If the air is flowing beautifully through the entire property, you probably do not have a need to worry.

If the airflow is less than optimal, it is time to get to work. Just adding a fan to the attic or crawlspace can improve airflow a great deal, so that is a good place to get started. Be sure to use the fans you have, like the exhaust fan in your bathroom and kitchen, as doing so will make a mold infestation less likely.

4. Stop Water Leaks Quickly

Water leaks can spark a mold problem like nothing else, so it pays to be vigilant. Beachfront locations are often prone to sudden storms, so take a look around your property as soon as the rainfall has stopped. Check the ceilings for discoloration and damp spots, as these could indicate roof leaks and standing water.

Even the smallest leak, if left untreated, can spark a mold problem, so check for leaks regularly and treat them quickly. Eternal vigilance about water leaks is one of the most efficient ways to stop a mold problem before it starts.

5. Use Dry Storage

Having a dry place to store your belongings is critical when you live in a beachfront property or oceanside home. It is not enough to stack your spare belongings in the attic or hide them in the basement, as improper storage could lead to excess moisture and the growth of mold.

Instead of stacking your belongings willy nilly, take the time to place them in sealed boxes. Do this for your attic, crawlspace, garage and every other storage area in your beachfront or oceanside home. Storing your items properly and in sealed containers can prevent moisture buildup before it starts, and save you some costly repairs.

Maintain Your Home Properly to Avoid Future Repair Costs

Mold remediation can be expensive and is always a complicated and arduous process. That is why it is so important to focus on preventing mold, especially black mold.

Water damage can happen anywhere, but it is far more likely in oceanside and beachfront locations along California's coast. If you want to enjoy all the great things the beach has to offer, do yourself a favor and make mold prevention measures a regular part of your home maintenance. With the right mold remediation plan, you can avoid costly damage and have more time to enjoy your wonderful home.

How to Handle a Water Damage Situation

Water damage is one of the most devastating emergencies that can occur in a home or business. A flooded home business can cause significant damage to a structure and valuables.

Water damage happens fast and furiously when there is a pipe break, supply line break, roof leak or when flood waters come. Ceilings, carpeting, walls, wood floors, baseboards and personal possessions can be damaged or destroyed in a matter of minutes.

Being prepared to deal with a flooded home or water in home or business damage is about knowing what steps to take when it happens and acting fast to stop the source of water in home or flood damage, protect occupants and belongings, then begin the tedious and time-consuming task of cleaning up the affected area.

Here are the main steps for dealing with a flooded home or water in business emergency.

1. Call A Restoration Company

2. Stop the Water Flow

The causes of water or flood damage in a business or home include a pipe break, a supply line break, pressurized water line, or a burst hot water tank. Knowing where the water shutoffs are located is crucial for immediately stopping the water flow and preventing further damage. While waiting for the mitigation team to arrive, you should locate the main water supply and shut it off.

3. Think Safety

Shutting off all electrical sources is critical and this can be done by unplugging devices or snapping the circuit breakers. Water is a good electrical conductor and a water in home or water in business situation could easily create a serious shock. Making sure everyone is safely away from the flooded area is crucial.

4. Protect Precious Valuables

Water-soaked items quickly begin to rot. Remove or raise possessions, including boxes and furniture, from the flood water. It is recommended to remove your highest risk belongings and safety put them in an area with warm, moving air. Removing carpeting or other flooring materials, door moldings and baseboards are best left to restoration professionals to handle.

5. Contact Your Insurance Company

It is important to contact your insurance provider and find out how the water cleanup and restoration will be approached. Insurance company representatives who specialize in water cleanup and mitigation can expert advice and proper guidance on water damage coverage. Trying to handle your own water cleanup and mitigation may compromise your insurance policy, leaving you with huge expenses.

Restoration professionals have the skills, drying techniques and state-of-the-art equipment like pumps, dehumidifiers and air movers to remove flood water and moisture. Fire Damage Restoration Services After a Residential Fire

7/24/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Restoration Services After a Residential Fire

Today a rapidly emerging new field offers renewed hope to homeowners who have sustained residential fires. This developing industry holds the potential to assist property owners during the challenging aftermath of a house or apartment fire. Instead of struggling to board up or sell a visibly damaged structure, now homeowners who experienced fire damage can gain a better opportunity to refurbish charred, flame-scarred real estate holdings. Fire in home settings no longer necessarily causes irrevocable losses in long term home values.

Restoring Business Premises

After a conflagration in business settings, professional restoration companies typically assist with fire cleanup efforts. These firms help remove the lingering smoke smell which accompanies extensive commercial fire damage. They bring in specially trained workers to perform the challenging process of removing visible traces of soot damage and smoke damage from the premises. Thanks to their efforts, the entire process of fire damage restoration proceeds more quickly and smoothly. Indeed, when a full time commercial fire damage company supervises fire cleanup after a fire in business premises, customers may not detect evidence of the disaster afterwards.

Now some fire damage restoration firms offer services for the benefit of residential property owners, too. Using a restoration company's services permits a household to renew living spaces following fire in home settings. This process helps eliminate the persistent smoke smell and the ugly smoke damage and soot damage which so many households associate with a traumatic event. If you experienced a blaze in your residence recently, consider inviting a restoration company to explore possible fire cleanup and fire damage repair and renovation measures with you. The available solutions may pleasantly surprise you!

Comprehensive Training

Just like the firms which address commercial fire damage, companies engaging in residential board up and fire cleanup sometimes specialize in specific market niches. For example, an enterprise helping homeowners clean and revitalize premises that sustained heavy fire damage may focus on vacation homes or condo restoration. Some restoration company managers concentrate on assisting clients within specific regional markets. Others operate cleaning businesses in addition to supplying specialized fire damage restoration services.

The IICRC offers certification classes for restoration company personnel. These specialized courses help restoration specialists learn how to clean up excess water and debris correctly at the sites of residential fires. Instructors supply training in soot damage and smoke damage cleanup techniques, and the elimination of noxious smoke smell aromas from a variety of different household materials. Fire cleanup and board up in the aftermath of residential fire damage has become a systematic process thanks to these types of specialized training programs. The detailed courses help restoration experts learn to restore property correctly.

A Methodical Approach

How does a specialist approach the process of restoring premises after a fire in business settings or a fire in home environments? The process involves several methodical steps:

Surveying and documenting fire damage;
Preparing a comprehensive fire damage restoration plan;
Performing systematic water removal, debris cleanup and property refurbishment.

Ultimately, this process permits the cleaning away of smoke damage and soot damage. It removes any lingering smoke smell.

Neither fire in business premises nor fire in home environments should precipitate automatic board up efforts at damaged properties today. While in certain cases temporary board up of impacted structures may represent the best solution, it makes sense to consult with an expert first before excluding restoration options. Just as specialists frequently help mitigate commercial fire damage following a fire in business locations, they may assist homeowners in restoring and revivifying burned residential properties, too.

Recovering From House Fires

Even a fairly small residential fire can cause painful losses for residents. The wider availability of professional restoration company services today assists many homeowners. Consider exploring this solution if your home has sustained residential fire damage recently.

Benefits of Professional Mold Remediation

7/24/2017 (Permalink)

Benefits of Professional Mold Remediation

Respiratory exposure to mold will often cause grave health complications, which is especially true for immunosuppressed individuals. Although the majority of mold species are hardly disease causing, it is hard to tell which one might infest the home or business premises and the extent of damage it is capable of causing. In light of the imminent structural damage caused by mold such as dry rot on wood, it is imperative to hire a mildew restoration company upon suspecting that an infestation of mold in home or even commercial mold damage might occur.

The fungus is capable of growing anywhere and causing mold damage provided that there is sufficient moisture and oxygen. In fact, black mold will grow on any organic matter including insulation, paper, and foods, as well as on wood in which case it could cause dry rot. Leaving a surface with too much moisture unattended for a couple of days will most certainly lead to the growth of mold in home or commercial mold damage. While eradication of mildew spores is virtually impossible, it is crucial to control the moisture to limit the fungus infestation, including mold growth behind wall.

Sources of Moisture

Moisture resulting into mold in home and commercial mold damage will often arise from variable sources, with the most common being uncontrolled humidity during the construction of a building. When a building is tightly sealed while lacking adequate ventilation, there is bound to be a buildup of moisture that will lead to black mold and the accompanying smelly odor. For instance, drywall will usually not facilitate the escape of moisture, thus the presence of mold growth behind wall. Other conditions facilitating mold growth and the subsequent mold damage include leaking roofs, pipe breaks, landscaping problems, unvented combustion appliances and poorly constructed gutters.

The process of Remediation and Mitigation

Any structure in flooded premises ought to be presumed to have mold-containing material, which is especially true if it hasn't been dried within 48 hours. In such instances, it is imperative to take appropriate mold removal and mitigation steps by contacting a mildew restoration company to reduce the risk of exposure. Mold damage mitigation requires an elaborate and systematic mold remediation process that can only be effectively executed by mold removal professionals who reduce the chances of smelly odor through effective deodorization.

The staff from the restoration company will begin the mold removal process by conducting an exposure assessment. This is directed towards determining the extent of mold growth and human exposure to black mold in the affected building as contamination is not always that apparent in flooded area.

Moisture Assessment and Visual Inspection

Professionals in mold removal and mitigation understand that the best method of identifying mold growth, except perhaps mold growth behind wall, is through visual inspection. Such inspection is directed towards determining the most appropriate remedial strategy to be employed for eliminating mold in home or commercial mold damage. This inspection should place emphasis on ceiling tiles, gypsum wallboard, cardboard, paper and cellulosic surfaces.

The professionals also understand that the majority of mildew contamination cannot be detected with the naked eye, which is especially true when it comes to ceilings and interior wall cavities that could be experiencing dry rot or mold growth behind wall. In determining the level of fungus infestation in such areas, these experts are sometimes compelled to approximate the sum of square feet of the affected structural materials, which is not an easy task.

Professional judgment will particularly come in handy when establishing such less quantifiable factors as location of the mold growth as well as use and function of the building. They will also check the ventilation system for possible dampness while inspecting the HVAC system for contamination, in the presence of which they might employ deodorization to get rid of the smelly odor if any. Besides, only a professional in mold removal can sufficiently comprehend the guidelines and algorithms for remediation provided by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Apart from possessing the requisite skills for remediation including deodorization for effective removal of the smelly odor, professionals in black mold mitigation will come with the appropriate equipment needed for effective assessment. Such include moisture meters a borescope and humidity meters for determining the moisture content of a building that could lead to mold damage.

Since the fungus is capable of infesting such hard to reach areas like inside walls, crawl places, and ceiling plenums among other tight areas, the professionals from a restoration company employ a borescope to eliminate the need to drill or cut walls in establishing mold growth behind wall. They also come with the required protective gear, including goggles, dust filter and gloves, which especially come in handy during deodorization to eradicate smelly odor and removal of the dry rot from the wooden structures.

A Typical Timeline of Damage Caused By Fire

6/29/2017 (Permalink)

A Typical Timeline of Damage Caused By Fire

When a fire happens, people are devastated, items are lost, but there may be hope for some belongings. Smoke and soot damage cause problems far beyond the fire. Many people do not know that waiting is just as detrimental to fabrics and other items as the fire itself. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification says that neutralizing the damage caused by the fire is an important first step in restoring any items that are salvageable. Whether you have a fire in business or a fire in home situations is irrelevant to handling the problem. Fire damage restoration provides the most benefits when it starts immediately after the disaster.

Fire damage within minutes

Causes yellowing and discoloration, especially with plastics
Marble counters take on lasting damage that is irreversible
Appliances show a yellow tinge almost immediately

Residential and commercial fire damage within hours

Furniture takes on dark colors and turns brown or yellow
The grout in the bathroom darkens
Bath fixtures and appliances take on a major yellow hue
Metals tarnish
Fiberglass objects turn yellow

It only takes days for more permanent soot damage to set in

Clothes and upholstery become yellow and permanently damaged
Furniture often needs replaced
Vinyl floors need refinished or removed
Wood floors need sanded and refinished
Metal pits and rusts
Paint is permanently discolored

Fire cleanup is about replacing after weeks of fire damage with no cleaning

Silver and other metals pit and rust
Synthetic materials are yellowed permanently
Crystal and glass items are full of marks, scratches and pits

Smoke damage and smoke smell make thorough cleaning necessary

Fire damage restoration starts with getting rid of the smoke smell. This step means opening up and airing it out. Large fans will help push most of the smell out of the air, but objects that are full of smoke damage need proper cleaning or thrown out. The IICRC says that cleaning starts at the ceiling and works best when doing the floors last. Fire cleanup begins with getting rid of the source of the smoke. When you have a fire in home, it might mean throwing out furniture and personal items like clothes, books, and electronics when they have significant fire damage. Cleaning salvageable items as quickly as possible is the best way to maximize what is saved.

Commercial fire damage often requires a professional fire damage restoration crew

A fire in business can stop everyone involved. Fire cleanup continues with removing items that need laundered and vacuuming the floors. Using a specialized commercial fire damage vacuum with high filtering abilities is what most fire damage restoration companies use to get the job done. A fire in business causes smoke smell that lingers for a long time. Getting rid of the affected items or cleaning them thoroughly is the only way to mitigate smoke damage. For agencies, this is crucial to getting back to normal after a disaster like a fire in business.

Residential soot damage is not always easy to clean

Soot damage is what causes the smoke smell after a fire in home. Fire cleanup needs to start immediately. For large fire damage situations, it is often best to call in an expert. There are many benefits of using a professional restoration crew like getting the job done fast, doing it right, saving what is damaged before the yellowing is permanent, and letting someone else handle the hassle of deep cleaning after a fire in home.

Whether a business has commercial fire damage or there is smoke damage in a home, the experts are the best ones to handle the job. They can handle soot damage and smoke smell for people. Time is of the essence after a fire.

Steps For Proper Mold Remediation

6/29/2017 (Permalink)

Steps For Proper Mold Remediation

Mold damage is never an issue that people like having to address. Whether it is mold in the home or commercial mold damage, it needs to be taken care of properly. There are many steps to taking care of a mold problem and to prevent it from spreading means doing the correct mode of treatment before it spreads to make sure it has been fully eradicated. A professional mold mitigation company knows what to look for and can formulate a plan to permanently get rid of any mold, mildew or fungus problem that their clients have. Once they finish the proper mold removal they will use a good deodorization technique to get rid of any leftover smelly odor.

Learn About Moisture In Mold Removal And Mitigation

Assessing the amount of mold damage in a home or business is more about finding the cause of the problem and less about just the mold, mildew or fungus that is visible. Mold is a very invisible intruder and can be lurking in small, unknown spaces that you cannot see until it has grown out of control. This kind of mold behavior requires a special thought process. It is important to realize first and foremost that all mold problems arise from a moisture or water problem. To become a master at mold removal, there has to be a lot of knowledge in how and where water and moisture gets inside a home or business.

Document The Mold Damage And Create Remediation Plan

Before the process of remediation or mitigation is started, a thorough documentation needs to be created first. This should include things like what types of mold, fungus and mildew are present. Will deodorization be necessary once the process is completed for a smelly odor? Every detail is important when forming a mold removal plan for mold in a home or a commercial mold damage problem. Along with these items, a list of what procedures are going to be completed, how they will be done and when the expected completion date is should also be included on the list and given to the client.

Calculate Extent Of Mold Damage Contamination

Mold doesn't always grow in one contained area. Mold spores can be spread easily through the air. Because of this, all heating and air ducts should be checked for contamination as well. If the extent of mold is big and covers a large area, then it may be necessary to have the homeowners or business owners leave the residence for a while until the mold has been cleaned up completely. Depending on the extent of the mildew, fungus and mold in a home or for a commercial mold damage issue, the mitigation process might take a while. Also, once the mold has been completely taken care of, there might be a leftover smelly odor which will need a lot of deodorization.

Basic Mold Remediation Cleanup Process

Mold remediation will always involve both cleaning up the existing mold while avoiding any exposure or contamination of other areas not yet exposed. This is especially important when getting rid of mold in a home or mitigation of commercial mold damage where people are present on a daily basis.

•Repair Cause Of Water Damage- This is the important first step so that no more mold begins to grow. Find and fix all areas where water or moisture may be coming from.

•Isolate Contamination- All access to other areas should be closed off from the room or rooms that are contaminated with mold so that it doesn't spread.

•Remove Damaged Materials- All wet and moldy items should be removed in plastic bags. They need to be disposed up properly or cleaned in an outside area thoroughly before being taken back inside.

•Cleanup- Once everything is removed and the contaminated area is closed off, it is time for the mold removal process to begin. All mold should be treated with the proper cleaning solutions and any vacuuming should be done with a HEPA vacuum to keep mold spores from being transferred. After the initial cleanup is complete, the deodorization process can be completed in order to get rid of any leftover smelly odor.

The Best Way To deal With Flood Damage in Your Home

If you encounter flood damage in your home, the cost of restoration can take its toll on your home improvement budget. Home insurance can help you to deal with flood damage. However, the flood damage isn’t covered by conventional insurance policy. As such, you will have to work with the insurer to determine and create a custom policy that suits your needs. At first, you will have to determine whether you are in a flood-prone area. Remove the water in business setups as soon as possible to avoid damaging the delicate equipment. In most cases, flood-prone areas have a poor drainage system, meaning that the government might provide some incentives to curb the problem. The water damage insurance policy should cover the cost of removing the water, water cleanup, drying, and restoration. The experts recommend that you think about the mitigation as well. Water in home spaces can cause the proliferation of molds within a short while.

Flood damage

The mitigation will involve inspecting the drainage channels and removing any soil and dirt that could cause the blockages. You will also anticipate the possible damage and take some steps to avert it. For example, you can replace the gypsum with another non-absorbent material that will withstand the water damage for a while. If you have some wooden floors, consider using varnish and other treatments to protect them from water damage. Getting rid of the water in business foyers can prevent it from getting into the working areas. Estimate the cost of repairs as you develop the policy to avoid disappointment. Getting adequate insurance for your home is a sure way to avoid disappointment when you encounter water damage. The insurance company will help you with the restoration, water cleanup, and mitigation to keep your home in the perfect condition. Start with the water in home carpets and take them outside to dry in the sun.

Anticipating the Water Damage

Since you might not foresee the nature of the flood damage while developing the insurance policy, it is wise to deal with a flexible insurer. The water in business parking lots can be difficult to remove if you do not have a reliable drainage system. All water in business verandas can seep into the foyers and offices within a short time. Such an insurer will make some adjustments to the policy depending on the flood damage. Instead of sticking with the original sum, such a company will execute the restoration and water cleanup depending on the home inspector’s report. This approach will help you to restore your home from water damage at no extra cost. If the water in home furniture is removed within a short time, you can salvage as many items as possible.

Home inspection

After drying the damp surfaces, you can begin to repair our home. A thorough home inspection report will help you to develop a budget for restoration and mitigation. The report should include some recommendations on how to solve the problem in the future. However, you cannot do the inspection until you remove the water. Once you get rid of the water, you should leave the home to dry naturally. In other instances, you might hire the drying equipment to fast-track the process. All water in home foundations should also be pumped out to stop the seepage and weakening of the structure to avoid problems in the future.

Since the floods can affect the entire neighborhood, you must prevent water from entering your home when you begin the water cleanup. While you might have undertaken some mitigation measures, you might have to take some temporary flood mitigation initiatives during the home restoration and water cleanup. Drying the home might take several days, meaning that you should find shelter for your family as you repair the house. Consulting a reputable contractor can help you to succeed in this project and reduce the cost significantly. Professional assistance is critical when it comes to repairing your home. What Should You Do If Your Home Is Damaged In A Fire

It's important to take the right steps to repair fire damage and reduce the smoke smell in the building. Here are a few fire damage restoration tips:

1. Get In Touch With Your Insurance Company:

Most home insurance plans cover damage from a fire in home. Some insurance providers will even cover the cost of lodging during a period of time that a fire in home makes it impossible to remain in your current residence.

Your home insurance company will have to schedule an assessment of the fire damage. Before this assessment takes place, don't do any significant repairs. This could result in an unfairly low assessment of the fire damage.

2. Act Quickly To Repair Soot Damage:

Sometimes, smoke damage can be just as serious as the fire damage. Additional soot damage can occur after the fire has already been put out. This is because it takes time for the soot to become firmly attached to surfaces. In some cases, it could take weeks to remove all the soot if you don't act quickly. In addition, removing the soot can reduce the smoke smell in the building.

Removing The Soot:

If you'll be removing any soot yourself, it is essential to take some safety precautions. Always wear a respirator while you're removing the soot from your home. In addition, a box fan can reduce the concentration of soot in the environment. It may even help to reduce smoke damage.

If it's possible, wash soot covered surfaces surfaces with soap and water. This is a highly effective way of repairing soot damage. Using a high efficiency vacuum cleaner is an effective way of removing soot from carpets, floors, and other surfaces. Ideally, the vacuum cleaner should have a HEPA filter on it. If there was clothing, bedding, or other linens in the house at the time of the fire, this should also be thoroughly cleaned.

A dry cleaning sponge can be an effective way to remove soot from surfaces. Exterior soot damage can often be cleaned off using a hose.

Even if you choose to repair some soot damage yourself, it's important to always contact a fire damage restoration professional for soot removal. Improperly removing soot can result in further damage to the property.

4. Take Steps To Prevent Fire In Home From Recurring:

During the fire cleanup for either residential or commercial fire damage, you should take steps to prevent a fire in home or fire in business from occurring. Here are some important fire prevention tips to keep in mind during the fire cleanup:

Have Your Entire Home Inspected: A home inspector can pinpoint danger areas, such as faulty wiring. It's essential to immediately get them repaired.
Always keep your microwave, oven, and stove clean. Grease build up can lead to fires. This is also important for fire in business location(s).
Always unplug items that aren't in use.
Don't use plugs that have missing grounding prongs.
Always remove lint from the lint trap of your dryer.
Make sure that the dryer ducts remain clean.
Space heaters are a common cause of house fires. If you need to use them at all, it's essential that you do so cautiously.
Remove excessive clutter in the house. Not only can clutter make it more difficult to see potential triggers of a fire, but it could worsen a fire if one ever did occur.

4. Repair Any Structural Damage:

One of the most important parts of fire cleanup is the repair of structural damage. Unfortunately, this can be one of the most expensive parts of the process. This is particularly true of extensive commercial fire damage.

5. Additional Steps To Minimize The Smoke Smell:

Sometimes, there can be a residual smoke smell even after restoration is completed. This is a particularly serious concern if you suffer a fire in business location(s). Luckily, deodorizers can help to reduce this odor from fire in business locations(s) or your home.

What Should I Look For When Hiring A Fire Damage Restoration Expert?

It's important to hire a fire damage restoration expert that is experienced in the field. Ideally, they should have many years of experience in the industry. In addition, it's important to always make sure that they are certified by the IIRC. Also, read reviews of any company you consider that offers fire cleanup and smoke damage cleanup. In addition, make sure that they are experts on repairing smoke damage. For commercial fire damage, it is essential to hire a cleanup crew that specializes in commercial fire damage.

How to Eliminate Molds from a Home

Molds are a problem in many residential and commercial buildings. They mostly grow and feed by organic matter, and they need a warm and moist environment for then to live. Molds in homes often bring a smelly odor, and one might have to conduct constant deodorization. Some places take excessive time to dry up, and therefore, they offer room for fungus and molds in homes. Homeowners can contact commercial mold damage control professionals to help in conducting the remediation process to prevent them from contaminating other places.

Mold removal should be done in the correct manner so as to avoid unnecessary expenses. One can handle the damage that is caused by the molds, fungus, and mildew by preventing them from spreading by killing them, removing the dead material, and protecting the cleaned area from being affected by fungus and molds in future. The following steps should be followed by any individual who would like to ensure mitigation of mold growth in homes without hiring commercial mold damage experts.

1. Inspection and testing for Fungus and Mold Presence. The homeowners conduct a thorough inspection to determine the areas that have visible mildew and those that are in hidden spaces. A hygrometer, humidity meter, and moisture meter can help in detecting places that are hard to find. One can also notice them because of their smelly odor. Finding the affected area is the first step of mitigation.

2. Containment. The infested area should be entirely covered using a 6 millimeter thick clear plastic bag to mitigate the movement and contamination of the mold spores in other parts of the house. This is a critical remediation step since one may have to hire commercial mold damage experts if the problem is out of control.

3. Ensure Body Protection. Individuals who conduct mold removal should wear a breathing mask with proper organic vapor filters that are classified as P100. One should also have a protective body suit that has a parka hood, disposable vinyl gloves, and boots. This assists in mitigation the chances of being affected by chemicals and the molds in the home.

4. Use proper Enzyme Treatment. There are various mold-eating enzyme treatments, and an example is Sporicidin Disinfectant Solution (SDS). This chemical can be sprayed using aerosol cans or a cheap fogging machine to fog the whole house. SDS is among the enzyme-based disinfectant cleaners that have been approved by the U.S Environmental Protection Agency. It ensures mitigation of fungi, bacteria, and mold damage by preventing their growth.

5. Vacuuming and Air Scrubbing. One should use high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) scrubbers after spraying the enzymes. The HEPA machine should be an industrial size to increase efficiency. The negative pressure that is exerted assists in collecting the airborne fungus and mold spores that are on the site. One can hire the commercial mold damage professionals is he or she cannot access a HEPA vacuum.

6. Physically Removal of the Molds. The visible mold growths should also be removed. This can be done by using different equipment such as wire brushes and sanding blocks for timber. Curtains and carpeting can be discarded or washed if the mold damage is not severe.

7. Proper dumping of Moldy Stuff. The infested material should be disposed of in a safe manner during mold removal. They can be carried in a 6 millimeter think garbage disposal bag. One should then clean the outside of the bag with hydrogen peroxide or a suitable detergent to remove any mold deposits. This will enable easy transportation without infecting other areas of the building.

8. Covering Timber Frames. After cleaning wood surfaces, the exposed parts should be painted and remediated with glossy latex enamel paint that has been mixed with a fungicide. The most preferred treatment to eliminate mildew and insects is Tim-Bor, which is an APA registered fungicide. The glossy latex protects penetration of water. Deodorization of the surfaces should also be done to eliminate any smelly odor.

9. Cleaning HVAC Ducts. The growth of molds in homes is often caused by lack of proper aeration. The presence of fungi contaminates heating, air conditioning, and ventilation dust and this leads to smelly odors in homes. Disinfection and deodorization should be done well as a remediation precaution for mold damage.

By following all the above steps for mold removal and remediation, people can have homes that are free of mildew. The growths often make all the areas that they affect to have a bad odor, and therefore, it is necessary to conduct some deodorization procedures.

Insurance agencies oftentimes do not desire to pay for any compensation or to reimburse for water cleanup services. Primarily, the owner should submit a claim. The owner ought to call the insurance agency concerning water in home as well as water in business to carry out water cleanup. Nonetheless, the homeowner must do anything that they can to begin mitigation. The insurance company might reject a claim if damage is seen to be produced by recklessness. The owner needs to insist upon an issuance of funds from the agency. It is helpful to reimburse for any living costs while the residence is being renovated. The agency needs to subtract any funds they deliver from the final amount. It is imperative to document any living costs. Managing A Fire Loss In Vista Or Oceanside, California

Fire damage in the Vista or Oceanside California area is something that every homeowner must deal with at once. They cannot allow the house to sit the way it is, and they will find it simple to repair the home after the fire ends. Water damage from fire is a mess that must be removed from the home at once, and this article explains how the homeowner may begin the fire cleanup that is so badly needed. There are a number of things to deal with, and they must handled the moment the fire is extinguished.

#1: How Bad Was The Fire?

The fire damage that occurs in the home comes along with smoke damage and soot damage that will hit all the parts of the house. The house must be cleaned out entirely, and it must have all the water damage from fire removed. The home will begin to grow mold unless the fire cleanup crew has removed everything that should not be there. The simplest plans of attack include cleaning out the house before it is repaired.

#2: Repairing The House

Soot and smoke will harm air quality in the house, and the homeowner must have the home sealed to ensure it is closed off completely. The homeowner may ask for tests of the air quality, and they will see the air quality continue to improve until they are done with testing. Someone who wishes to ensure their home is clean may ask for a number of tests that will be used until the home's air has been cleaned. Smoke damage and soot damage may get in everything including the air vents, and the mitigation company must clean everything before the home is certified to reenter.

#3: Preventing Fires

Fallbrook, Oceanside and Vista CA homeowners must have fireproofing done at their home that will ensure the space is safe from future fires. Forest fires and wildfires may hit the home, and a fireproofing coating on the house will ensure one ember does not cause the house to catch on fire. The homeowner may put in vents that will prevent soot and smoke from entering the house, and they may hide from fires that are passing by. The Fallbrook CA homeowner who has invested in the fireproofing technology will ensure their home is safe from any future fires.

#4: Proper Repair Work Takes Time

Repairing the home requires quite a lot of time that must be managed with the current weather conditions. Someone who wishes to see their home repaired quickly may be disappointed as it is not so simple. The house will be repaired in a timely manner around any rain or winds that may be occurring in the area. Homeowners who are searching for a simple way to ensure they are protected must survey the work that is done until it is complete. Proper work around the house will help prevent fires, clean the air and allow the family to move back in as soon as possible. Fire Loss Restoration in Oceanside and Fallbrook California

Fire Loss Restoration in Oceanside and Fallbrook California

In 2015, the U.S. recorded over 100,000 acres with up to nine million acres destroyed, and CA had over 8,700 wildfires with approximately 4.5 million acres burnt. Fallbrook, Oceanside, and Vista are in Southern CA, so the high temperatures and open land invite fires to grow. Insurance claims cover all types of fires: wildfires, electrical and accidental fires from candles to cigarettes, but a fire in your home would be disastrous.

When the entire house is burnt or the fire is contained to one part, there will be fire damage, soot damage, smoke damage and water damage from fire departments that must be addressed so that your insurance company can pay on the claim. It doesn't matter where or what state the fire occurred, fire loss is handled the same.

Fire Loss Tips

There is a process for fire cleanup and remediation, which means stopping the environmental damage that has taken place. Here are seven steps in a fire cleanup.

1) Water damage from fire must be completely dried before remediation will continue. This is to prevent mold or mildew from starting and spreading.
2) Have the air quality of the home tested, and if it is normal, the family may return. A fire will affect the Air Quality, so never neglect this step.
3) Soot and smoke will make incredible soot damage and smoke damage, and a fire cleanup company should be called. All of these individual damages along with water damage from fire departments falls under the heading of fire loss, which is the total loss from the fire.
4) Make an inventory of what was lost along with the cost of replacement. Use the same kind and quantity that originally there, and use the National Fire ICC-BVD app or search online. ICC-BVD also provides a worksheet and formula for replacement values.
5) Receipts and photographs for your possessions will ensure the insurance company reimbursing you.
6) If searching through the fire damage proves to be too difficult, estimate an amount lower than the total claim, and negotiate with the claims adjuster that comes to the home.
7) Save all receipts from the hotel stay, food, gas, and laundry, and this will be considered under convenience costs.

Keep in mind, when you are dealing with the insurance adjuster, he or she is not your friend. Their job is to make the homeowner feel comfortable and to gain their trust, so they can repay the lowest amount. Of course, the fire affected your lives as well as your possessions, but you want to be repaid for the worth of the possessions. The inventory and ICC-BVD worksheet is significant documentation and entitles you to your claim.

Fallbrook, Oceanside, and Vista are susceptible areas with the multitude of fires that occur in CA every year. Smoke, soot, mold and mildew are all included in the total fire loss but never hurry through the process. even if the insurance company wants you to. Take your time so if something comes up that was overlooked, it can be added. Visit http://www.SERVPROfallbrooksouthoceanside.com for more information on fire damage.

Mold Removal and Remediation in Fallbrook, Oceanside, CA and CO

3/24/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Removal and Remediation in Fallbrook, Oceanside, CA and CO

In Fallbrook, Oceanside, CA as well as CO, there are many varieties of these types of moldy growth, but every single species requires water or moisture to grow, so controlling moisture issues inside is what allows this type of growth to exist in homes without necessarily expanding into an issue. However, with even a small but constant rate of moisture, the organic destroying capabilities of certain microbial growths can become an issue that can make a home or business impossible to exist in for any amount of time. This destructive capability can be produced by moldy type substances and mildew that have no detrimental health side effects. These microbial substances are an integral section of the environment, and their role in the natural world is to biodegrade organic matter like dead trees and other dead organic material.

However, when these natural organic substances migrated indoors, humans understood quickly that they are a natural part of the environment that should be avoided. Moldy organisms, mildew and fungus multiply by releasing millions of microscopic spores. These invisible spores exist in outdoor and indoor air. This microbial growth migrates indoors when the spores affix themselves to surfaces that have at least one of the conditions necessary for them to survive which is organic material. Outside, this material would be dead leave and trees, but most construction material indoors is organic material on which these spores can survive. The outdoor material would naturally have some measure of moisture which is the second element that these spores need not only to survive, but to proliferate greatly.

However, if the cleanup and removal is not done completely, the issues will recur with great frequency. This is a problem for large moldy growth issues, but it is also a problem for the common business or homeowner that would like an odor to be eliminated completely without recurrence.

Additionally, not all of these growths can be eradicated with the same mold removal method or chemical. This means that the problem must be first identified properly by an environmental hygienist.

An environmental hygienist can solve the problem completely by first identifying the troubling issue, and then institution of an eradication and mold removal process suitable for the particular growth.

This will prevent a lot of unnecessary expense and time by fixing the problem correctly the first time. For more information on mold remediation and removal, visit http://www.SERVPROfallbrooksouthoceanside.com.

Coping With Water Loss in Fallbrook, CA

Water damage is the incident that leads to the most frequent insurance losses each year. Whether you live in Fallbrook, Ca, Oceanside, Ca or anywhere else in California, you must understand a water emergency can happen at any time. It could be caused by floods, broken pipes, sewage backups, leaks from appliances or holes in the roof. This can lead to water in home, water in business or even flood damage. The key to having your home or business repaired promptly is knowing what to do should one of those things occur. The following are a few guidelines.

The First Step

Should a water emergency occur, once you and the other occupants of the property are safely outside, your first step should be to call your insurance company. They can help to guide you through the water mitigation process. They can also tell you what type of flood damage and water damage coverage your policy contains. These coverages can vary depending on the policy and the company. The amount of your coverage will help you decide on the water cleanup and water restoration company you can afford. The insurance company will also decide if you property is a total loss.

Cleaning Up The Mess

Once the insurance company decides your home or business is not a total loss, you must quickly find the best company possible to clean up the mess. The long water remains in your property the more damage it will do. So it's essential to begin the drying process as soon as possible. A good company will act quickly to remove damp carpets, paddings, baseboards and other finishings to allow air movement through the walls and help them to dry. Doing this within the first 24 hours is critical to reducing property damage and preventing mold and mildew from taking hold and causing health problems.

Making Sure It Is Dry

Proper air movement is essential to the drying process when you have water in home, water in business or any other kind of water emergency. This is true whether you live in Fallbrook or Oceanside, CA or anywhere else in California. It is an important part of the water cleanup and water restoration process. That means the company you hire to do the mitigation on your water damage or flood damage must have the proper moisture detectors, hygrometers as well as infrared cameras to locate where the water is located. They must also use the right disinfectant products to prevent mold and mildew and have experience doing the entire process.

It is vital the mitigation and cleanup company you hire do a thorough job. Even if mistakes get past the claims adjuster, the property owner show makes sure the job is done right. If not the health of the people that visit the building could be at risk. The work of the water extraction company or restoration specialist must ensure there is no bacteria, fungi or black water with sewage or dangerous chemicals to cause problems later.

Are Your Pipes Breaking?

Water Damage Are Your Pipes Breaking? Copper Pipes Breaking (Oceanside & Camp Pendleton)

Do you know what to do after a Fire?

(Oceanside & Camp Pendleton Fire Remediation)

A broken pipe and the water damage cleanup it causes is a nightmare for every homeowner or office manager.  Even a broken sink pipe with a small amount of water can do significant damage in a short period of time. In the Southern California - Oceanside – Camp Pendleton areas this scenario is becoming more and more likely because of the housing boom we experienced years ago.  “How is that relevant?” you say.  Well because there were so many homes being built back in 2005 – 2007 copper pipe manufactures were not able to keep up with the demand and so contractors started purchasing substandard copper piping from China.  Understanding that there will be thousands of homes and businesses that will be the victims of this shortsightedness here are a few things you can do when you are unfortunate enough to experience this crisis?

The first thing that you should do is find the source of the water damage and stop the flow 0f additional water from entering your home.  The more water the bigger the water damage cleanup and more extensive the problem.  It's easy to figure out when you've left a faucet on or a hard rain had filled your basement. But if you have a broken pipe that has burst that can’t be seen, you must turn off the water supply to your home as quickly as possible.  The water main is often in your garage or in your front yard under a cement plate designated “Water”.

It is important to understand that even though there is a lot of work ahead to fix your water damage problem you can call professional water restoration experts like SERVPRO Fallbrook South Oceanside, they can save you many headaches and help you settle with your insurance company.  Additionally they can give you tips on what to do until HELP arrives.

Now, assuming you can manage the water repair on your own, the first step is to extract as much water by mopping or blotting, wipe off or remove all furniture, and remove any rugs.  A wet vacuum would be great to remove large quantities of water, so you may need to rent one.

Next, get fresh air moving through the area.   Open windows and turn on as many fans as possible to get the air flowing throughout the house or office. This will help dry the area, and will also help to reduce odors later on.  You will need to rent high speed fans.  Keep in mind that if you do not have enough air flow or dehumidifying machines to significantly dry an area (carpet, cement, drywall, wood, etc.) it will eventually create black mold and that is another problem you do not want.

Next, start a dehumidifier running as quickly as possible to take moisture out of the air.  Depending on the size of the water damage you may need to rent an industrial dehumidifier.  Along with the fans, this will help accelerate your water damage cleanup efforts by removing the moisture quicker. Be sure to check the reservoir tank often and empty it regularly. It is necessary to run your dehumidifier until things are completely dry to avoid the conditions where mold and mildew can grow.

The next step is very important and will save hassles later. Take many photos of the damaged areas as evidence for your insurance claim. Like any accident, documentation is critical and gives you proof that will put you in the best position possible when settling your claim.

It is important to note that wood surfaces that have been affected by the water are more urgent than carpeted areas. Wood is porous and can soak up the water causing warping and delaminating. It is a good idea to remove the water as quickly as possible and then use fans and a dehumidifier on these areas first.  One of the better was to remove water from wood flooring is a wet vacuum.

Finally, call your insurance company and determine if the water damage is covered under your homeowner’s policy.  The experienced pros at SERVPRO are in the Oceanside – Camp Pendleton area, are available 24/7 and can help you with this and all the additional steps to water damage cleanup & repair, quickly.

Fire Damage For Oceanside / Fallbrook, A Fire Damage Restoration Guide Oceanside / Fallbrook Residents: house fires can be stressful. We can help carry the burden.

Fire Damage Guide for an Oceanside / Fallbrook Home

As many homeowners know, fire damage to an Oceanside, Fallbrook, Bonsall, or Vista home can produce extensive trauma on the part of the property owner. However, knowing what steps to take following this type of disaster, caused by nature or human error, can help you minimize emotional distress. You will also be better prepared to mitigate structural damage to your home by being clear-headed. Learn more about what steps you should take after your home has been affected by a fire, refer to this quick reference guide:

There are several steps you need to implement once fire damage has become a reality in your Oceanside, Fallbrook, Bonsall, or Vista home.

1. Determine Where You Will Stay.

Once a fire has occurred, it's important that you first determine whether it is safe to reenter your home. This decision to possibly reenter your St Petersburg house is reserved for minor fires, not flaming infernos. In the event that there are still signs of smoke, fire, or structural damage, you should never attempt to enter the premises. In this case, it may be necessary for you to stay with a family member or in a hotel. Determining where you'll stay is not the first step to take during the process of returning your life to a state of normalcy, but it can provide an anchor. In addition to determining where you'll stay if you cannot reenter your property, it's important for you to call your loved ones and friends. Provide them with a basic overview of the situation and they may be able to help you with shelter and advice.

2. Call The Professionals.

After you've determined where you'll stay, be sure to contact your insurance company and then a professional fire damage restoration company like SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside. These experts will begin assessing the situation, determining a course of action, and then begin the cleanup, repair and if need be, the restoration of your property's structure. The clean-up process will involve the elimination of smoke and fire damage in addition to water removal. The water extraction procedure is of the utmost importance for lessening damage to furnishings, walls, and floors, and for stifling the growth of mold. A SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside representative will also offer to communicate and coordinate the entire process with your insurance adjuster.

Fire Damage SERVPRO Can Clean, Restore and Deodorize Your Property After Fire Damage in Oceanside / Fallbrook Time is crucial following a fire because damage continues even after the last flame is extinguished.

After an event as traumatic and devastating as a fire, you'll need to seek restoration specialists as soon as the fire trucks are gone. Prevent further damage to your home by calling in professional help to treat Oceanside / Fallbrook residential or commercial fire damage within 24 hours. Time is crucial following a fire because damage continues even after the last flame is extinguished. By bringing in a licensed company immediately after the disaster, you can save your home or business from further damage that is caused by corrosive chemicals, seeping water and quickly growing mold and rot. Know the four elements of fire damage and what can be done to repair or mitigate the damage to your home's structure, electrical components, HVAC system and personal or commercial property.

Fire Damage

Fire damage is the destruction caused by the fire itself and accompanying heat damage. Fire chars what it touches melts many noncombustible items and causes paint and wallpaper to peel. Even when the fire has been extinguished, it continues to destroy through the toxic, corrosive substances left behind.

Smoke Damage

Often more invasive and destructive than the fire itself are the insidious effects of smoke damage, extending far beyond the site of the fire and permeating deep into the building, HVAC system, furniture, insulation and personal possessions. Unless properly cleaned and deodorized, the foul smell of smoke may linger for the long term, and the chemicals caused by the fire's combustion are often corrosive and sometimes toxic. A professional mitigation company will have the right equipment to clean thoroughly and restore your home to its original, safe, scent-free condition. Smoke damage falls into four basic categories.

• Wet smoke: Caused by the low-heat melting of plastics and synthetics, the damage is sticky and smeary with a strong odor.

• Dry smoke: Caused by fast-burning wood and paper, the residue is dry and powdery.

• Protein: This chemical is mostly invisible, but it discolors paint and carries a very pungent odor.

• Fuel oil: The soot from burning fuel oil is known as puff backs.

Water Damage

When firefighters are fighting the flames, fire hoses flood the structure at rates of 95 gallons per minute in order to save your home. Unfortunately, this saturation can cause a new set of problems unless you seek timely intervention from a trained professional. The water will find its way down through the house from the fire-affected area, soaking floors, walls, ceilings, structural voids, electrical components, insulation, furniture and personal possessions. You'll need to act quickly to get an Oceanside / Fallbrook residential or commercial fire damage expert on site to clean up and mitigate the destruction.  SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside has the equipment and expertise to handle any size job.

Mold and Rot Damage

Within 24 to 48 hours, a process will occur that can cause lasting problems for your home or commercial property. Call the professionals immediately to forestall the growth of mold that can cause health effects, cause structural damage and destroy personal property. Basic Oceanside / Fallbrook Water Damage Remediation Steps

5/6/2016 (Permalink)

Water Damage Basic Oceanside / Fallbrook Water Damage Remediation Steps Damage from water can quickly destroy a home by staining furnishings, encouraging the development of rot and causing the growth of mold.

Basic Water Damage Remediation Steps For Your Oceanside / Fallbrook Home

Damage from water can quickly destroy a home by staining furnishings, encouraging the development of rot and causing the growth of mold. While some minor water damage can be repaired by a homeowner, in almost every case it is best to allow a Oceanside / Fallbrook water damage repair specialist to do the work, like SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside. SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside will know what problem signs to look for inside the home and will be able to determine the proper course of correction. Though the use of a water damage specialist is recommended, homeowners can take some basic steps to reduce the damage to their flooded homes.

Before worrying about the Oceanside / Fallbrook water damage, a homeowner needs to make certain that the home is safe. It is important to inspect the structure for stability and any potential exterior threats. Inside the home, the largest potential threat is electrocution. The power to the home should be turned off by the power company or an electrician before entering the home. Once the power is off, the home can be inspected for damage and other potential safety hazards.

Once it is determined that the home is safe, the bulk of the water should be removed as quickly as possible. Windows and doors should be opened to provide ventilation into the home. Standing water can be removed by the use of a pump, swept out doors or mopped up. Water should be drained into a storm drain or downhill from the property to prevent it from running back inside. Once the bulk of the water is removed, fans can be used to accelerate drying. A dehumidifier can also help to remove excess moisture from the air.

Furniture and other moveable items should be take outside and left in the sun to begin to dry. Wood furniture should be wiped clean. In most cases, upholstered furniture is not worth trying to save as mold will grow inside the furniture if even the smallest amount of moisture is left behind. Pictures and other sentimental items should also be placed in the sun to dry. Clothing should be laundered as soon as possible. A vacuum approved for use with water can also be used to remove excess water from items.

Once a home is as clean and dry as possible, it should be professionally inspected for mold. Mold can grow inside walls, on piping and wiring and in other areas most homeowners cannot easily inspect. Oceanside / Fallbrook  water damage remediation experts, like SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside, can find these hiding places and also apply special coatings to surfaces inside the home to prevent the growth of mold.

What To Do After Flooding

•   Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.

•   Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removal of lamps and tabletop items.

•   Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions.

•   Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.

•   Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer.

•   Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting.

•   Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.

•   Gather loose items from floors.

What NOT To Do After Flooding

•   Don't leave wet fabrics in place. Hang furs and leather goods.

•   Don't leave books, magazines or other colored items on wet carpet or floors.

•   Don't use your household vacuum to remove water.

•   Don't use television or other household appliances.

Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet, and keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging.

Being Prepared For a Water Emergency

5/4/2016 (Permalink)

Water Damage Being Prepared For a Water Emergency By having a plan to deal with water damage emergencies, it can decrease the extent of the damage and shorten the time frame to restore your home.

As a general rule, emergencies and catastrophes happen when they are least expected. However, just because they weren't expected at the moment they occurred does not mean we cannot be prepared for them. This is especially true when it comes to dealing with a water damage emergency. By having a plan to deal with water damage emergencies, it can decrease the extent of the damage and shorten the time frame to restore your home. Therefore it should be essential to sit down and write out the specific steps that should be taken not just for water emergencies, but all emergencies.

At the heart of this plan should be a list of professionals that can be called to assist with the rescue and recovery of this emergency. The most obvious of these will be the people who can stop the crisis from continuing. For instance, it would be ideal to call the water department and or fire department to shut off the water if a busted pipe is causing your basement to flood and was causing a water damage emergency. Once the reasons of the emergency have been contained, it is time to call the next professional on the list. That would hopefully be the insurance adjuster to assess the damage the emergency has caused and will get the process of paying for the repairs moving in a positive direction.

If you are dealing with a water emergency, the extent of the damage could be extensive and is often beyond the capabilities of even the best DIY homeowner. For this type of damage, it would be an excellent idea to contact a company like SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside. They have trained professionals that are experts at figuring out the exact extent of water damage and making the clean-up and repairs as fast as possible.

It is possible that repairing the damage from these emergencies can take a significant period of time depending on its extent. Therefore, to keep the timeline and costs to a minimum, you will need to hire a quality company like SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside. They have a reputation that has been built on years of cleaning up after the damage of these emergencies. Hopefully, you will never need to use this plan, but if water damage emergencies and catastrophes do happen to you, then you will be happy you had a plan. Even more joyous, if you have SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside making sure your home is put back together again.

Act Quickly with SERVPRO's Help To Mitigate Water Damage Effects to Your Oceanside / Fallbrook Property

5/3/2016 (Permalink)

Water Damage Act Quickly with SERVPRO's Help To Mitigate Water Damage Effects to Your Oceanside / Fallbrook Property SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside Says Interior Condensation Can Lead to Water Damage.

Water damage in Oceanside / Fallbrook is a troublesome issue that many homeowners are not prepared to react to because of lack of prior planning. However, learning more about how to grapple with water damage is the key to mitigating damage to the structure and personal belongings. Eliminating conducive conditions leading to water damage, as a proactive measure, is the recommendation of SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside. Why not stop water damage before it even begins?  Here are several signs you can look for to determine whether your home shows signs that may lead to water damage.

• Excessive condensation or humidity, poor ventilation, roof leakages, leaking pipes, dripping faucets, damp basements, and non-percolating ground water.

• Warped or rotting wood from water absorption, rusting metals due to oxidation, and musty odors in the house that may be the result of mold growth.

How Water Damage Restoration Professionals Can Help

Once you recognize one or several of the water damage signs outlined above, it is time for you to call a professional restoration company like SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside. As industry professionals we posses all of the equipment and tools necessary to do the following:

• Complete a thorough property assessment through inspection using measuring instruments such as moisture meters and infrared detection.

• Identify additional signs of water damage on your property in Oceanside / Fallbrook, or surrounding North San Diego County.

• Determine the type, source, and extent of water damage and stop further water intrusion.

Why Immediate Action Is Important

Less exposure to water, especially pooling water or hidden condensation within walls or crawl spaces, will limit water damage to your building in Oceanside / Fallbrook. Moisture, can within several days, lead to the start of mold growth. If left unchecked, damage can occur to cellulose materials like the cardboard backing on drywall or studs. Some strains of fungi can also lead to potentially unhealthy exposure to mycotoxins.

Why You Should Not Attempt to Complete A DIY Project

In many cases, property owners who recognize signs of water damage in their residential living space are inclined to completed a DIY project. You should never take this course of action once there is visible damage. Proper drying of waterlogged or damp items lessens the amount of personal possessions that may have to be discarded. Most homeowners do not possess the equipment for water extraction and dehumidifying, experience, and expertise to effectively clean their property for a positive water damage restoration result.

Fire Damage Oceanside / Fallbrook - What Do I Do After a Fire?

5/2/2016 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Fire Damage Oceanside / Fallbrook - What Do I Do After a Fire? Fire's in your Oceanside / Fallbrook home cause not only fire damage, but water damage too.

Fire damage is a home owner’s worst nightmare. Even a small fire can require costly repairs when all is said and done. Without the knowledge or professional aid of a restoration crew, it is easy to feel lost and alone when recovering from a home fire. That is why research is key. Talk to a restoration crew about the after effects of fire damage so that you are better equipped to deal with the lingering effects of smoke and scorched property. Regardless of the size of the fire, it is always a good idea to schedule an inspection before attempting any fixes on your own.

Once you know what you are dealing with, you can begin the slow and daunting task of restoring your home to its former glory. When a home in Oceanside / Fallbrook has fire damage occur, there will be an unpleasant odor, due to the soot and smoke that is left behind. It is not recommended that the home owner attempt to clean the soot on their own, especially after a large fire. The reason is that soot and leftover smoke can be hazardous to your health. Professional gear is required to handle such fire damage safely and efficiently. Only a professional restoration team has access to the cleaning agents used to treat smoke, soot and fire damage.

Before dealing with a contractor, it is important that you speak to your insurance agent. After a fire, you may receive quotes from eager construction crews willing to help you rebuild. However, what is in your insurance policy will likely dictate the course of action when it comes to reconstruction. It is best to let your agent deal with this, so that you can focus on other things.

Your insurance company will need a list of all damaged property. Be sure to separate all damaged and undamaged items to make this process easier. If all goes well, you will be reimbursed for the damaged items, depending on your insurance policy. You may even be reimbursed for storage fees, if you need to remove damaged items from your home. This is a good idea, as burnt property may contain harmful soot and make the deodorizing process more difficult. You may also want to move undamaged property to a safe location. Furniture, and other items, might absorb the unpleasant odor, ruining an otherwise undamaged piece of property.

Your insurance company may cover Loss of Use. This means that they will pay for shelter and food if your home is unfit to live in while the restoration process occurs. If so, it is best to be reasonable when reserving a hotel or motel for your family. The insurance company will only cover what is necessary, and this will help you to avoid complications when the bill arrives.

Most home owners would not consider water damage after a fire. However, the two usually go hand in hand, as water is used when extinguishing a fire. Water damage can be just as destructive, so be sure to treat your home accordingly. A water removal team will help to prevent any further destruction and the development of mold.

SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside utilizes advanced equipment and technology to quicken the restoration time and to minimize cost. We proudly serve with 24/7 emergency availability.

SERVPRO Offers Tips on Water Damage Signs in Fallbrook / South Oceanside

5/1/2016 (Permalink)

Water Damage SERVPRO Offers Tips on Water Damage Signs in Fallbrook / South Oceanside Water Damage to Wood Flooring in San Diego County

Unfortunately, water can flow to any area of your home once a structural defect or natural disaster strikes your property. Water Damage in Fallbrook and Oceanside or anywhere in San Diego County can be an expensive and upsetting result of this unwanted water. SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside suggests, that by reading the following tell-tale signs of water intrusion you may recognize and stymie the onslaught of extensive and expensive water damage to your home.

1. Unpleasant Smells

When hidden residual water or moisture accumulates on your property, it can initiate the growth of mold and mildew. This will produce an earthy, musty odor which functions as a red flag that unseen water damage is present on your property.

2. Visual Signs of Mold Growth

Mold spores are microscopic, lying dormant in most homes, and will eventually produce mold colonies when provided with moisture. Food sources--cellulose materials and other organics are readily available. When the moisture comes in contact with dormant spores, the active mold growth process will begin. If you note any fuzzy discolorations in isolated corners or voids, and are not sure if mold is growing, you should have these spaces professionally inspected. SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside will visit your property in Fallbrook, Oceanside, Vista, Bonsall, and San Diego North County to offer complimentary advice.

3. Stains on Walls and Ceilings

When water seeps into subflooring and the spaces between the levels of your structure, it will generate water stains as it starts to saturate the adjacent ceiling or wall board. This form of water damage can be a precursor to widening problems.

4. Peeling Paint or Wall Paper

These can happen to your walls as water wicks and lifts the paint or loosens the paste securing the wallpaper. The water or moisture source should be discovered and repaired immediately.

5. Sagging Walls and Ceilings

Saturated ceiling materials or drywall can appear to be displaced because of the added weight of water. Once this happens, the structures can start to buckle and deform. When walls and ceilings become soaked with water, they pose a safety hazard from falling. Don't ignore any tell-tale signs of water absorption into porous drywall.

6. Floor Effects

Water seeks its lowest level when allowed to flow. The flooring is the usual endpoint as water can collect beneath ceramic or vinyl tile (also damaging subfloor sheathing), carpets and padding. Newly manufactured laminate flooring is particularly susceptible to water damage. If your subfloor becomes completely soaked, restoring rather than replacing the materials, becomes more remote. SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside makes every effort to remove the water and dry out these flooring materials, but often they are non-salvageable and must be safely discarded.

When armed with this information, SERVPRO of Fallbrook / South Oceanside Professionals can calculate and create an environment most condusive to drying. When facing a contaminated water loss, it is not only important to dry the structure, but the structure must also be disinfected and often deodorized.

•   Ultra Low-Volume (ULV) Foggers will atomize liquid deodorizing agents, producing a fine mist that can easily penetrate the site where odor-causing residues may accumulate. This device can also be used to inject fungicides and disinfectants into wall cavities and other hard-to-reach areas.

Many of us North County (Oceanside) residents are nice and cozy with the thought that our weather is one of the best in the nation.  However, from time to time, and especially during the end of a drought or during El Nino we will get the large rain storms that wreak havoc on our drainage systems. These systems have had minimal use in the past years, and will flood and destroy our beautiful homes and businesses because of the overload of water.  These flash flood storms create two unique challenges for us Southern Cali Folks.

First and most important is to stop the flow of water, dry out and cleanup the damage.  SERVPRO Fallbrook South Oceanside (760) 451-0600 is on call 24 hours a day, to inspect damage and to begin the Water extraction process.  We use advanced inspection and monitoring equipment to determine you’re your home’s structure is actually dry.

If Water damage is NOT handled quickly and properly, it can cause severe damage to your home’s structure not to mention the potential harmful health effects of mold. Remember, the longer you wait, the worse the problem will get.

Second, does your insurance cover the cleanup and restoration?  Obviously the best action is to contact your insurance company.  But if you have State Farm insurance call 800-782-8332, and if you need to file a claim you’ll need to Find a State Farm location

If you do not have Flood insurance take a look at the average prices for flood insurance for Californians.

You can also reference maps available called FIRM (Flood Insurance Rate Map) that show a community’s base flood elevations, flood zones, and floodplain boundaries.  These maps will determine if you are in a higher flood zone and may pay more for flood insurance.

Here are the most common reasons your home or business may experience water damage.

·         A blocked or failed sewer lateral pipe

·         Heavy rain causes surface Water to pool around your home

·         Storm sewer backup

·         Sanitary sewer backup

·         Foundation drainage failure

·         Water supply-line break or hot-Water tank failure

The flooding in many Oceanside homes is caused by storm sewer backup. Oceanside has had very unusually high rain in the past month, and is expected to get even worse and these conditions can overwhelm the system.
